Adrian John Hislop was born to R. Guy Hislop and Emma Senesac Hislop on March 2, 1919. He attended school in Jeffers, MN, and graduated in 1938. In his school years, he always took part in musical activities, and was a good student. Following high school graduation, he attended Mankato State College and Dunwoody Institute. He enlisted in the US Navy in December of 1943. On August 25, 1944, he married his high school sweetheart, Hope Evelyn Noble in San Diego, CA.
Adrian's military career was only 2 years in duration, but was filled with action, like many others in the service. He was assigned to the USS Bismarck Sea, which was an aircraft carrier. He was in the radar division. The Bismarck Sea was stationed off the coast of Iwo Jima with a fleet of ships. Unfortunately they took two devastating kamikaze hits, forcing 'Abandon Ship' orders to be given at 7:30 p.m. Adrian was in the Pacific Ocean for over 2 hours in shark-infested waters, with the Japanese strafing overhead. He was rescued by the USS Taylor and taken to Honolulu, Hawaii, and several days later, to San Francisco. The sailors were told that they would never have to see service in foreign waters again because of the traumatic experience they had gone through. After a well-deserved 90-day leave, he reported back to duty in San Francisco. Contrary to what he had been told, he was assigned to the Battleship USS Pennsylvania. Shortly thereafter, the ship headed for Okinawa, Japan, and it wasn't long before it, too, was hit, this time by torpedoes, on the day the Armistice was signed. They pumped water for days and limped back to the states. On December 24, 1945, he received honorable discharge from the US Navy.
Adrian and Hope made their home in Windom, MN. Adrian worked in an electrical shop for 6 years, and then became an inspector for Toro Manufacturing. He worked at Toro for 32 years as a manager of the Quality Control Department. He was a life member of the Legion, a member of the Lions Club, Jaycees, VA, DAV, and Knights of Columbus. Adrian's hobbies included fixing things up, tending to plants and flowers, hunting and fishing (in younger years), and keeping a well-manicured lawn.
Adrian and Hope have 3 daughters, Margaret, Kathy, and Andrea, and a deceased infant son. Adrian was a gentle father. When discipline was needed, it was always done in a loving manner. He was so proud of his girls, and supported them in every way. And with each new addition in the family, he rejoiced in their birth and loved them endlessly.
After Adrian and Hope retired, they spent the next 20 years dividing their time between their Windom home, a trailer on Mill Lake Resort (near Alexandria, MN - from May through September), and a condominium in Anaheim, CA (from January through March).
Adrian and Hope would have reached their 64th wedding anniversary later this summer, on August 25th, 2008. Their years together were wonderful years, with some stressful times like all experience. Their love will be eternal. Adrian went to his heavenly home Monday, July 14th after a massive stroke July 5th. Adrian came from a family of five siblings. Irene, the lone survivor, lives in the Good Samaritan Home in Jackson, MN. Adrian lost two brothers, Bob and Gene, and a sister, Elaine, and his parents.
Thank God for Adrian and for his family with Hope. In addition to their three daughters, Adrian and Hope have 3 sons-in law, 6 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Margaret and Mike live in Aitkin, MN, Kathy and Wayne live in Farwell, MN, and Andrea and Virg live in Faribault, MN. Adrian was a beloved husband, dad and grandpa, and will be dearly missed.
