Duane (Dick) Carroll Madsen was born December 20, 1938 to Edwin and Marie (Sheridan) Madsen in Havelock, Iowa. At an early age he was baptized at Fort Dodge, IA and later confirmed at Sioux Rapids, IA. Duane moved with his family to Rembrandt, Iowa where he attended Rembrandt Consolidated School. At the age of 15, Duane moved to Heron Lake with his parents, graduating from Heron Lake High School in 1957. He was then drafted in the U.S. Army in 1961, where he served in Germany. During his military service he held top secret clearance.
Duane married Joan Kay Stenzel on April 4, 1964 in Heron Lake, MN. Together they farmed and were the parents of four children. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and Herbert Kellam American Legion Post.
On Friday evening, January 18th, 2008, Duane passed away at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN, at the age of 69, after his four year battle with ALS. He was surrounded by the love of his family.
Duane is survived by his wife, Joan; one son, Michael and his wife, Diana of Heron Lake, MN; three daughters, Carole and her husband William Reinhardt of Estherville, IA; Rachel and her husband Troy Haar of Lakefield, MN; Janelle and her husband Ben Johnson of LeMars, IA; two grandsons, Andrew and Matthew Madsen; four granddaughters, Sarah Madsen, Adelee and Audree Reinhardt, Kendra Haar; five brothers, Merle Madsen; Melvin Madsen and his wife Phyllis; Clarence Madsen and his wife Marie; Jerry Madsen and his wife Margie; Robert Madsen and his wife Sandy; two sisters, Maxine and her husband Lee Launderville; Jean Madsen; three sisters-in-law, Eunice Madsen; Arlene Ivers; Bonnie Madsen and numerous nieces and nephews.
Duane is preceded into death by his parents and two brothers; Dale Madsen and Edwin Madsen Jr.
