Erma R. Johnson was born on May 30, 1931, in rural Darfur, Minnesota to the late Conrad L. and Ida Pearl (Jurgens) Brand. She was baptized at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Darfur and later confirmed on May 20, 1945, at West Sveadahl in rural St. James. She received her education in the St. James Schools; graduating in the Class of 1949. She then worked at the bank in Darfur where she met Glen.
On May 8, 1951, Erma was united in marriage to Glen W. Johnson at West Sveadahl. This marriage was blessed with one son and three daughters.
Erma and Glen farmed near Darfur until 1973, at which time they moved to a farm west of Windom. They then became members of the American Lutheran Church in Windom. Through the years, Erma worked at the Windom Meal Site and then for the Cottonwood County Historical Society up until the present time. In 1984, Erma and Glen moved off the farm and to the Cottonwood County Landfill where Glen was the manager. Glen passed away suddenly on March 27, 1989. Shortly after his death, Erma moved into Windom where she lived for many years until recently moving to Mikkelsen Manor in Windom.
On April 2, 2013, Erma became suddenly ill and was airlifted to Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, where she passed away that day at the age of 81 years.
Erma was a longtime member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom and the Cottonwood County Historical Society. Through the years, Erma had a very strong faith that helped her through many trials. Her biggest enjoyment in life was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Erma is survived by one son and two daughters, Kevin Johnson of Austin, TX; Karen Anderson (Thomas) of Plainview; Sandy Peterson (Lee) of Windom; 4 grandchildren, Britta Bergland (Jesse); Megan Johnson (fiance, Jack Dwyer); Matthew Anderson; Kristen Juhlin (Nic); three great-grandchildren, Willa Bergland; Jackson and Calleigh Juhlin; one brother, Robert Brand (Shirley) of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Erma is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen; one daughter, Charlene Kay Johnson; one brother, Ronald Brand; two sisters, Winifred and Vivian Brand.
