Obituary for Harold William Martens

Harold William Martens was born on April 3, 1926 in Delafield Township, Jackson County, Minnesota to the late Louis and Martha (Keeler) Martens. He was educated in the Lakefield schools. He entered the United States Army in August 1944 at Camp Robertson, AK where he received his basic training. Harold was sent to the South Pacific with the 1st Calvary and saw action in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. When the war ended, his unit was in the harbor of Yokohama, Japan and Harold served in the Honor Guard assigned to General Douglas MacArthur at Tokyo, Japan. He returned to Fort Sheridan, IL for discharge in December, 1946.

When he returned to Lakefield, he worked in the construction business with Albert Will for nine years, then J.O.M. Schlottach Construction and then on the road for Dayco Construction of Chanhassen for seven years. He retired on May 22, 1991.

On January 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to Delores Rehnelt at the Delafield Lutheran Church. This marriage was blessed with one son. Harold was a member of the VFW Post in Lakefield. He had many enjoyments in life which included, spending time with family, especially grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gardening, fishing, NASCAR-having been to Daytona and Talladega, Vikings football, traveling-Yellowstone, Black Hills, Disney World, Wisconsin Dells and Estes Park to name a few.

Harold had been experiencing declining health for a couple of years. After a short stay at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield, he passed away at the age of 92 years on Sunday, October 21, 2018.

Harold is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Delores Martens of Lakefield; one son, Gary (Judy) Martens of Lakefield; three grandchildren, Amanda Martens of Lakefield; James (Emily) Waters of Farmington; Christopher (Lara) Waters of Highlands Ranch, CO; great-grandchildren, Evan and Alex Waters, Jackson Talks and Arie and Evelyn Waters; one sister, Delores Berkness of Worthington; and several nieces and nephews.

Harold is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Floyd Martens.
