Obituary for James "Jim" Slade

James Paul Slade (Jim) was born on December 14, 1939 in Butler, Pennsylvania. He lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania until he was a little over 14 years old, then moved to Florida. He was baptized in 1958 at The First Presbyterian Church in Lake Worth, Florida. He attended college at Palmer Chiropractic School in Iowa and then transferred to Northwestern Chiropractic College in Minnesota. During this time, he met his wife, Jan. They married September 8, 1962. After living in Florida for about a year, they then moved to Charleston South Carolina. In April 1970 Jan gave birth to their only child, Julie.

Jim held many jobs/careers. Besides being a chiropractor, he also owned four Shell gas stations in South Carolina. He was proud to be the first one in South Carolina to do a trial as a self-service gas station. In 1981, Shell decided to pull out of South Carolina and the family decided to move to Minnesota to be closer to Jan’s side of the family. Jim worked as an accountant, owned a beauty salon and co-owned an auto repair shop. Jim discovered he had a passion for painting pictures. He had said once he had done more than 200. He liked to do them for people. The photo of him holding a painting on this document is of a painting he did for Superman/Christopher Reeves. Julie had a childhood friend that was paralyzed from the chest down in a car accident. So, Jim did a painting for him in honor of her. (We were given a news clipping of Julie’s friend meeting him). This is in his book of paintings available for others to view. The title of the painting is “I’ll Be back.” Jim did a painting for the minister that married Julie and Mark. This was mentioned by the minister during the wedding. He also painted the original Jeffers Baptist Church that he and Jan were married in.

For many months Jim’s health declined and he became of resident of Laurel’s Peak Nursing Home in Mankato, MN. This is where he passed away on January 21, 2019, with his daughter by his side.

Jim is survived by one daughter, Julie Slade-Kamatchus (Mark), two grandsons, William (Will) and Matthew, two step-grandchildren Sierra and Emily. Jim is also survived by a brother-in-law, Stanley (Carol) Smith and sister-in-law Darlene (Paul) Brown. Also, many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife Jan Slade and a grandchild, “Sweet Baby K” that Julie lost in early pregnancy.

Jim will be missed dearly as he was the best dad and grandpa anyone could ever have.
