Josephine "Jo" A. Johnson was born on November 23, 1913 to the late William Andrew and Ruth Opal (Wise) Newcomer at Heron Lake, Minnesota. She was baptized in the Heron Lake Methodist Church in 1928 and lived in the farming community in the Heron Lake area where she attended rural schools. She graduated in 1931 from high school in Heron Lake and attended Normal Training School in Lakefield, Minnesota and graduated in 1932 with a teaching certificate. Jo never used her teaching certificate as she was a stay at home wife and mother. Jo enjoyed sewing, was a 4-H Leader for 15 years and a PTA President at the Wilder School. On January 10, 1934 Jo was united in marriage to William August Johnson in Heron Lake, MN. This marriage was blessed with four children, Daryl, Darlene, Sharon, and Larry. Bill died in March 13, 1960 in an accident on the farm. Jo continued to live on the farm until November 1973 when she moved into Windom. Jo worked at the Green Lantern Café from 1960 to 1969 before working at Mix Bakery until she retired in 1977. Jo was active in the Methodist Church and was a member of RSVP for 20 years. She especially enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels. She started bowling in the fall of 1960 and continued bowling until April 1999 and was selected Bowler of the Year for the season of 1982 – 1983. Jo enjoyed traveling to visit family on both coasts. The Senior Center was a source of great enjoyment where she loved playing cards and visiting with friends. She also enjoyed reading, crocheting, making afghans for all her family, and crosswords in pen. Jo lived by herself in her home until February 2008 when she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-The Village in Mountain Lake, where she lived until passing away on August 25, 2008 at the wonderful age of 94 years. Jo is survived by her four children, Daryl of Norwalk, CT; Darlene Speth and her husband, Bob of Sioux Falls, SD; Sharon Singewald and her husband, Alan of Norwalk, CT; and Larry and his wife, Marilyn of Blaine, MN; 6 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Viola Winkel of Windom; Wilma Sogge of Windom; Loris Creel and her husband, Bob of Spokane, WA; and brother, Alfred Newcomer and his wife, Betty of Dexter, OR. Jo was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ruth Newcomer; husband, William "Bill"; brothers, Valdon and Marvin Newcomer; and infant sister, Annabelle.
