Merval Dennis Thompson was born on May 20, 1924 in Windom, Minnesota to Julian and Clara (Hanson) Thompson. He was baptized and confirmed at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. Merval received his education in the Windom Area Schools through the 8th grade. Merval continued living in Windom where he farmed for 75 years. He semi-retired in 1988 and continued farming and helping others with field work. Merval was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom. One of Merval's pride and joys was being one of the founding fathers of the Sun Valley Gun Club. During his lifetime membership he held many offices, including president, secretary and treasurer. He loved fishing, hunting, farming, sports, fast pitch softball, CASE and Oliver tractors. Merval passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2008, at his home in Windom at the age of 84. He is survived by two sister-in-laws, Betty Thompson of Windom and Sharon Thompson of Windom; one aunt, Avis Hanson of Windom; one uncle, Lester L. Hanson of Spicer; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Merval is preceded in death by two brothers, Lenhart Thompson and Basil Thompson; and one sister, Darlene Schomberg.
