Nancy Langhorne Hill was born on June 9, 1922, in Preston, Virginia, to Thomas and Stella Hill whose family grew to include 8 girls and one boy. When she was 3 years old, her family moved to Mulberry, Florida, where her mother ran a grocery store and her father worked for the railroad. Nancy helped in the store and graduated from Mulberry High School in 1939. Her family moved to Lakeland, Florida, where Nancy attended Florida Southern College and worked as a bookkeeper, operator, and announcer at Radio Station WLAK. She met Jack at a church youth group meeting while he was stationed in Lakeland before being sent overseas during WWII. When he returned, they were married in Lakeland, Florida, on October 14, 1945, and moved to Windom, Minnesota. Nancy worked at the telephone company a few months before the couple moved out to the family farm nearby. Over the years she worked at various places in Windom, including The First National Bank Insurance Department, FHA, ASC, and finally the Farm Credit Services where she worked for 27 1/2 years. Nancy accepted Christ as her Savior at age 15 at the Mulberry Methodist Church and was baptized when she was 18 at the Southside Baptist Church in Lakeland. In Windom, she taught Sunday school, worked with the youth group, sang in the choir, and served as financial secretary for the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed growing flowers, bird-watching, hiking with her Sunday school students, playing piano and violin, and spending her winters in Lakeland, Florida, near her family for many years. She moved into Windom at age 80 because her severe arthritis did not permit her to live on the farm any longer. At age 90 she moved to Cumberland, KY to live with her daughter, Karen, who gave her excellent care the rest of her days. Her life motto was, "It's a great life if you don't weaken!" She was a great example of perseverance through difficulties to her children and grandchildren. On Sunday, February 14, 2016, she passed away in Cumberland, KY at the age of 93 years. She is survived by her husband, Jack of Windom, daughter Karen (Larry) Reader of Cumberland, KY, daughter Judy (David) Sloma of Peoria, AZ, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Stella Darby and Anna Flanagan of Lakeland, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents.
