Nelva "Penny" D. Egge was born on July 29, 1922, in Great Bend Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota to the late Virgil and Orpha (Hildreth) Roberts. She was baptized at a young age in the First United Methodist Church in Windom. At the age of 16 months, she moved with her family to Plover, Iowa ?later moving to West Bend, Scranton, and Rolfe, Iowa. While living in Rolfe, Penny was confirmed in the Methodist faith and graduated from high school in 1941. She went to Cedar Falls, Iowa where she worked in a café and for different families. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now know as U of NW Iowa). In 1943, she returned to the home of her parents who had moved to Bingham Lake, Minnesota.
On September 11, 1943, Penny was united in marriage to Orville Egge at the Methodist Church in Bingham Lake. Orville and Penny farmed his home farm from 1943-1964 when they moved to Windom. Five children were born to them including, Clifford, Donna, Susan, Mary, and Ellen. Penny was a homemaker and also worked at the List Café, Mix Bakery, Wynn's Hardware, and Ronnie's Market before retiring in 1978. Penny enjoyed her family, traveling, crafts, plants, flowers, reading, visiting with people, history, and most of all, her grandchildren.
Penny's health had been declining and she became a resident of the Sogge Good Samaritan Society in Windom and remained in Windom until becoming ill and was taken to Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she passed away on Tuesday afternoon, February 19, 2008 at the wonderful age of 85.
Penny was a longtime member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom where she was involved in circle and ladies aid. In her earlier years, she was also involved with 4-H.
Penny's surviving family includes her four children, Donna (Michael) Hinton of Norfolk, AR; Susan Egge of New Hope; Mary (Joseph) Edwards of Mankato; Ellen (Deloy) King of Windom; five grandchildren, Nicole (Scott) Ware, Monica (Jason) Knutson, Jason (Sarah) King, Andrew (fiancé Kim) and Kyle (special friend, Joleen) Edwards; four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; two brothers and two sisters, Everett Roberts of Eagle Grove, IA; Lou Ella (Stan) Kindler of Morgan; Jack Roberts of Soquel, CA; Mary Pichette of Coos Bay, OR; one sister-in-law, Lois Roberts; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Penny is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orville Egge in December 2003; one son, Clifford D. Egge; mother and father-in-law, Theodore and Hannah Egge; two brothers, Darwin and Loren Roberts; one sister, Estilyn "Bobby" Williams; and one brother-in-law, Jim Pichette; sister-in-law, Maxine Roberts.
