Obituary

Richard "Dick" Severson was born on September 14, 1931 in Mountain Lake, Minnesota to the late Theodore Richard and Freda L. (Derksen) Severson. He was baptized and confirmed at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. Dick received his education in the Windom Public Schools; graduating in the Class of 1949. He then enlisted in the National Guard Battery B. 125th Field Artillery Battalion on December 12, 1949 and was honorably discharged on August 17, 1950. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia and served during the Korean War. On June 11, 1954, Dick was honorably discharged. Dick began his career with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety at the Prior University station in 1957. He also served at Red Wing, Marshall and Fairmont stations until making his home in Windom in 1960. On June 9, 1962, Dick was united in marriage to Grace Rudolph at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville, Minnesota. They made their life in Windom and Dick continued his career as a Driver's Examiner. For thirty-four and half years, Dick gave driver's tests until his retirement on August 16, 1991. After his retirement, Dick and Grace remained in Windom and spent many winters in Texas. As Winter Texans, they spent their time swimming in the pool, playing cards, golfing, taking day trips into Mexico, and going to dances in their park. Recently, Dick's health had been declining and he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Windom on January 5, 2018. He passed away on August 16, 2018, at the age of 86 years. Dick was a longtime member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom. He was a member of the American Legion Post 206 in Windom, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, El Riad Shriners, Prudence Lodge #97 and the Gopher Shrine Club of Windom. Dick's enjoyments were many and included golf, hunting, bowling, playing cards-especially pinochle and spending time with family; especially his grandchildren. Dick is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Grace Severson of Windom; one daughter, Kathy (Ryan) Nielsen of Lynd; three grandchildren, Aaron, Grant and Sarah Nielsen; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Tillie Severson. God Bless his memory.
