Obituary for Russell Goertzen

Russell Reuben Goertzen was born November 17, 1926 on the farm in Carson Township. His parents were Diedrich J. and Agnes Fast Goertzen. He was to live on this same farm for the next 81 years.

Russell attended District 16 school in Delft for the first 8 years, then on to High School in Bingham Lake, where he graduated in 1945. Two weeks after graduation Russell enlisted in the US Army where he went on to become a medic in the Medical Corps, rising to the rank of Sargent. He was discharged 17 months later.

Russell returned home, to the life he loved, on the farm. Shortly after, in September of 1948, he married Martha Baerg. They moved into a house that had been moved onto the yard of the home farm.

Russell was a mixed grain farmer and a dairyman. His herd of Holstein cows was a source of pride and frustration, depending on the week. During this time, he was involved with many different dairy boards and farm related boards. He was an active member of the Immanuel Mennonite Church, serving in many capacities throughout his life. He joined the Gideon’s and served as their chairman for several years. He also served as Commander of the Legion Post 389 for several years. He and Martha continued to farm until his health forced him to sell the cows in 1982. He continued to farm, retiring in 1990.

Two daughters were born into the family, Joyce and Ruth. The girls were active on the farm and enjoyed the support of their parents in such activities as 4-H, band, choir and other school related events.

Russell and Martha were able to travel once the cows were gone. They enjoyed seeing friends in Peru, Japan, Australia, Europe, as well as all over the states, having traveled to all but 3 states. There were also about 30 trips to Canada interspersed in the travel itinerary.

In 2007 Russell and Martha moved to Remick Ridge. They enjoyed 6 years there until failing health once again required a transition to the Good Samaritan care facility for both of them. This was to become Russell’s final earthly home.

He survived by his wife of 70 years, Martha, daughters Joyce (Doug) Ritchie of Rocky Mountain House, AB. Canada and Ruth (Rick) Earl of Austin MN. Five grandchildren: Kara and Cordell Friesen, Wainwright AB., Alyssa and Josh Barker, Rimbey AB., Shawna and Brad Stirrett, Calgary AB., Dan Kaufman, Boyden, IA., Mike and Rebecca Kaufman of Hampton VA. and 12 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Clayton and his wife Mary Goertzen, his sister MaryAnn and her husband Marvin Wall as well as one nephew James Goertzen.
