Alfred Henry Eigenberg was born on March 20, 1934, on the family farm in Springfield Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota to Henry and Lilly (Hensel) Eigenberg. He was baptized on April 22nd, 1934, at his home and confirmed on May 16, 1948, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Okabena, Minnesota where he was a member for his whole life. Alfred attended country school as a child in Springfield Township District #17, and later graduated from the Heron Lake High School in the Spring of 1952. Alfred was a farmer his whole life. Farming was a very labor intensive in those days, and there were very few breaks. As a young man, Alfred did everything that was required of him from raising livestock to pitching bundles. Alfred even had the opportunity to help with the horses for farming while the tractor era took place. Alfred farmed with his brother Leonard his entire career and the two of them were very close and could even be considered twins by people who didn't know them. As a young man at the Minnesota State Fair, as a 4-H member serving as an usher, Alfred learned he had a heart condition during a routine physical. In February of 1984, he had open heart surgery and had an artificial valve replace his defective one, which successfully lasted the duration of his life. During the operation, it was finally diagnosed as a Bicuspid Aortic Valve, which he was born with. It wasn't without challenges though and Alfred took very good care of himself after the surgery including a lot of walking which he enjoyed and was also great for his overall well-being. Alfred lived with dignity, as his father passed away in 1963, and he stayed home to take care of his mother and his special brother, Dale. Dale was born with Cerebral Palsy, and Alfred assumed the challenge with honor. His mother, Lilly moved off the farm in 1985, and passed away in 1986. Dale remained at home until the Spring of 1994, when he moved to the Good Samaritan Society Sogge Memorial in Windom, Minnesota to receive the care he needed. Dale passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2019. Alfred faithfully went to visit Dale every evening for 24 years, until Dale's passing. His loyalty to Dale was a true sign of his grace. Alfred remained on the farm until September 24, 2021, when he went to the hospital for a heart attack. He then passed away at the Good Samaritan Society Sogge Memorial in Windom on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at the age of 87 years, 7 months and 18 days. Alfred served on the Springfield Township Board for 30 years, and various church boards. He was also the official bookkeeper for the farm until his retirement in 1998. Alfred enjoyed taking care of the farm during his retirement, including immaculate care of the lawn, and stayed very active for as long as he could. He enjoyed reading, watching the Minnesota Vikings and Twins play, and made numerous trips to Louisville, KY for the National Farm Machinery Show. He was friendly and was known for having an infectious smile and laugh and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He also enjoyed family gatherings, including birthday parties for his great nephews who lived in the area and looked forwards to whenever he could see nieces and nephews from a distance. He especially loved the Century Farm celebration in the Summer of 2014 when most of the family was home for the celebration. Alfred was also an avid aviation fan, especially of World War aircrafts. His favorite aircraft was the P38. Alfred is survived by brothers, Pastor Edwin (Doris) Eigenberg of Windom, Leonard (Norma) Eigenberg of Heron Lake; nephews, Dan (Cheryl) Eigenberg of Yakima, WA, Steve (Kim) Eigenberg of Sacramento, CA, Bruce Eigenberg of Heron Lake, James (Ruth) of Heron Lake; nieces Karen (John) Cress of Glendale, CA, Beth (Gale) Henrick of Denver, CO, Judy Burleson of Sacramento, CA, Sherilyn Malloy of Eagle Lake, MN; and many great nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his father, Henry Eigenberg, mother, Lilly (Hensel) Eigenberg, infant brother, Raymond Eigenberg, brother, Dale Eigenberg.
