A Celebration of Life Service to honor the life and legacy of Arlene Block, age 96, of Norwood Young America, formerly of rural Windom, will be held on Monday, October 21st, at 2:00 PM, with a time of visitation and gathering from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in rural Windom.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are preferred.

Arlene Block the daughter of William and Alvina (Baas) Schmeling was born September 29, 1928, in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She died on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at The Harbor at Peace Village in Norwood Young America, Minnesota at the age of 96.

She was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Emmetsburg, IA and confirmed at Hauge Lutheran Church in rural Bergen, MN.

She moved to southern Minnesota with her parents, living in several places, before moving to Windom in 1945. Graduating from Windom High School in 1947.

On September 14, 1949, she was united in marriage to Carl Block. They made their home on Carl's parent's farm in rural Windom. They were blessed with two children, Wayne Douglas and Susan Marie.

Arlene worked at Northwestern Bell until the office closed in 1981, then as a farm wife, and finally in 1989 began at Flatgard Shoes continuing until retirement.

She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Windom, MN and Ladies Aid.

She enjoyed traveling, with trips not limited to Germany, Colorado, and Alaska, being outdoors, lawn care and gardening. Also, going on fishing trips up north and Canada, reeling in a 15 lb northern. Once bowled a perfect game. She was known for her fiery red hair that matched her personality. She made the best holiday treats and much coveted potato salad.

Preceded in death by her parents; husband; son; three sisters, Helen, Marcella, and Lucille; three brothers, Louis, Harold, and Chuck.

She is survived by their daughter, Susan (special friend John Barnes) of Hamburg, MN; daughter-in-law Bev (Mark) Wahl of Merrifield, MN; grandchildren, Travis (Lisa) Block of Prairie City, IA, Amanda (Ryan) Finnerty of Hamburg, MN, Brandon (Annette) Buckentin of Hassloch Germany, Jamie (Shani) Wahl of Grainger, IA, Hilary Wahl of Des Moines, IA, Micah (Karen) Wahl of Brainerd, MN,  Miranda (Jake) Schick of Adel, IA;  twenty great-grandchildren and xix great-great grandchildren.
