Arlo Leo "Doc" Bretzman, and his twin brother, were born April 1, 1934 in Heron Lake township, Jackson County. His parents were Elmer and Elsie (Roesner) Bretzman Sr. He grew up in the area, where he also received his education at Delafield Parochial School. Later, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country in the Army's artillery division. After his Honorable Discharge, Doc returned home to continue his life - long farming career. As a youngster, he was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church and maintained his membership in the church. On March 10, 1972, Doc was united in marriage to Violet Raatz in Sioux Falls, SD. Throughout their life together, Doc and Vi lived in the Lakefield and Windom area. With many years of experience as a farmer, Doc began to retire in 1998, but continued his interest and passion in farming to his last days. As a man with many interests, Doc especially loved attending and participating in farm auctions and knew values of most related items at auction. He loved to talk farming and machinery with anyone at any time and when he was done you always knew-OK! Thank you! Click, dial tone. In his younger years, he also enjoyed fishing near Fergus Falls, MN, hunting antelope, and always enjoyed dancing to many kinds of music. He was always open to listen to polka music at special times. Violet died in 2011, and Doc continued to live on his farm and remained active. He died from cancer at the age of 85 on October 27, 2019. He is survived by his twin brother, Eldo "Shorty" Bretzman of Windom, brother-in-law, Harold Jacobson of Lakefield, sister, Lola (Jerry) Berdell of Odin, brothers, Frederick "Rick" (Patricia) Bretzman of Worthington, and Ted (Pat) Bretzman of Lakefield. Besides his wife, Doc was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janelle Joy in 1974, brother, Elmer Bretzman Jr., sisters Delores Mews, Audrey Jacobson, sisters-in-law, Shirley Raatz, June Bretzman, and Marabelle Lindell.
