Obituary

Audrey Joan Engquist was born February 25, 1934 in Oak Park, Illinois to Carl Albert and Helen Nora (Anderson) Engquist. She was baptized at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elmwood Park. She attended grade school in Elmwood Park until 1945, when her family moved to Granada, Minnesota, and shortly afterward to Fairmont. It was in Wally Spielman's 10th grade English class at Fairmont High School where Audrey met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Byers. They finished their remaining high school years together and graduated in the class of 1951. After high school, Audrey worked at the First National Bank of Fairmont while Bob attended the School of Pharmacy at SDSU in Brookings South Dakota. Audrey eventually moved to Brookings, where she worked at SDSU's registrar's office. On Valentine's Day 1953 Bob "popped the question" and said "we're going ring shopping!!" During Christmas break, on December 26, 1954, Audrey and Bob were united in marriage at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, with attendants LeeAnn Backstrom and Howard Engquist. Bob and Audrey lived in Brookings until Bob's pharmacy graduation in 1956, when they moved to Clark South Dakota, where Bob was employed at Knutson Drug and Audrey worked at the Clark County National Bank. In February 1957, son Bruce Robert was born. Several months later Bob took a pharmacist job at Lewis Drug in Sioux Falls, where the family moved and lived for nine years and Audrey became a devoted homemaker, In November of 1960, daughter Carol Ann was born. In November 1966, Bob and Audrey purchased Bordie Olson's Drug Store in Windom, and Audrey became bookkeeper at the new Byers Drug Store. In April 1976, their new Walgreens Byers Drug Store building was built, and Audrey worked side-by-side with Bob, offering wonderful bookkeeping, merchandise ordering, and customer service. Audrey and Bob always considered their customers and employees as their good friends. In 1994, their independent locally owned Windom drug store era came to an end when Byers Buy-Rite Drug Store sold their inventory to Pamida Drug Store in Windom, and the building was sold to Cottonwood County. Audrey retired at this time while Bob worked several more years at Pamida Pharmacy before retiring. After that, they spent much of their time traveling, attending concerts, and spending time with their family and friends. Audrey and Bob were blessed to celebrate 60 years of marriage in December 2014. In 2011, Audrey was diagnosed with a rare type of Parkinson's disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a progressive debilitating disease with no cure. In September 2013, she moved to the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Home in Windom, where her health steadily deteriorated. In the early hours of February 18, 2015, Audrey passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 18 days. On February 25, 2015, which would have been Audrey's 81st birthday, her family and friends celebrate her earthly life while she celebrates her new life in Heaven! Audrey was a long time member of the American Lutheran Church where she was active in Ladies Aid, and was part of a committee that counted offerings. Audrey kept up with computer technology and was known for her heartfelt letter writing, emails, and her special homemade computer greeting cards.
