August Wiggans Turner (Wig) was born June 15, 1924, to the late Ernest and Jenny Turner in Windom, MN. Wig was baptized and confirmed in the American Lutheran Church in Windom, where he was a lifelong member. His education from grade 1 to 6 took place in a country school in Lakeside Township District 23. He entered the seventh grade in Windom Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1942. Wig then enrolled in the engineering programs at Gustavus College where he remained until he was called up by Air Corp in 1943. Wig piloted a B-26 bomber in offensive missions in the European Theater of War. He completed 38 combat missions. After V-E day he acted as an instructor to co-pilots in the B-26 plane. After his tour of duty was completed, he returned home to the farm and began farming with his family. Soon Wig started buying some land of his own to expand the farm business. He loved the land and learned more and more about the land and nature every day. Wig was also a voracious reader all his life. In 1950, Wig met Wanda Dovre, a teacher, in Windom. They were married in Minneota, Minnesota. They lived in an apartment in Windom where Wanda continued teaching while Wig was farming. Soon the Korean conflict broke out and Wig was again called into the service, this time with the local National Guard which he had recently joined. He served as an F.O. in the field artillery unit, serving there from 1951 – 1952 when he was suddenly contacted by the Red Cross that his newborn baby girl was very sick, and the doctor suggested he get an emergency leave to come home to be with his family. Wig arrived home the day after the funeral of their baby. Wig was soon discharged. Soon they bought a farm with buildings, and this is where they lived the rest of their lives. Here they raised four healthy boys who enjoyed the rural life and enjoyed access to Fish Lake where the family enjoyed swimming, boating and learning how to water ski. They often had bonfires, roasted hot dogs and made smores in the evening. This was family's bonding time. Wig was baptized at the American Lutheran Church and has been a faithful member for over 91 years. He served as usher, Board of Trustees and the Church council. He was also a former Commander of the VFW, a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, the Lakeview Cemetery Board, Lakeside Township Board, the BARC, the Concert Association, he served on United Savings and Loan Board, member of the Windom Golf. He was honored to receive the HIRAM Award from the Grand Lodge of Minnesota. Wig received a certificate for 70 years as a member of the American Legion in 2018. Wig enjoyed flying all his life- maintaining a Piper Cub airplane at the home farm with a grass strip which he enjoyed using until he was 90 years old. Wig and Wanda enjoyed many trips together visiting interesting places in the states as well as overseas. Best of all they enjoyed and felt blessed at the opportunity to grow old together and watch their children and grandchildren grow up and mature. Wig and Wanda lived to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary in 2020. The last month of Wig's life he lived at Pineview where he received excellent care. Wig is survived by his wife, Wanda, four sons: Jim of Bingham Lake, MN, Bruce (Lisa) of Bingham Lake, MN, Roger (Marcia) of Eden Prairie, and Paul (Jackie) of Bingham Lake; grandchildren Matthew (Eliot), Alex, Peter, Katie, Michelle, Mark, Eric, Emily (Cody), and John (Bailey); sister-in-law, Faye Turner. He was preceded in death by his baby daughter, Judith Ann Turner, his parents, Ernest and Jenny Turner, brothers, Peter Turner and Robert Turner and sister, Joan Reed.
