Obituary

Betty Lou Kipfer was born on September 12, 1936, in Windom, Minnesota to the late Oliver and Ida (Halter) Torkelson. She received her early education in District #3 Lamberton until moving to Windom where she attended String Lakes Country School and later graduated from Windom High School in the Class of 1954. Betty Lou was baptized on November 12, 1936 in Jeffers, Minnesota and later confirmed at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. On December 26, 1970, Betty Lou was united in marriage to Marlon "Slim" Kipfer at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. After marriage, Betty and Slim farmed with Slim's family until 1972 when they purchased the family farm. In 2003, Betty and Slim retired from farming and remained on the farm. Slim passed away on April 27, 2009. After his death, Betty remained on the farm until finding love again and was united in marriage to Edwin Kragt in Spirit Lake, Iowa. After marriage, Betty and Edwin made their home in Spirit Lake, Iowa and had several wonderful years and memories together. Recently, Betty's health began to decline, and she became hospitalized at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester where she passed away Sunday morning, August 2, 2020 at the age of 83 years. Betty was a longtime, faithful member and supporter of the American Lutheran Church in Windom where she was a past president of WELCA, taught Sunday and Bible School, headed up the lutefisk suppers and funeral lunches. Betty was a wonderful wife and mother who will be remembered and missed for many things in life which included her love of traveling, especially with Slim and the grandchildren to the Black Hills and most of all, Betty loved her family and children, especially her grandchildren. Betty is survived by her husband, Edwin Kragt of Spirit Lake, IA; two daughters, Linda and Kevin Gerdes of Windom; Vicki Norton of Willmar; 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one on the way; one great-great-granddaughter and one on the way; one brother, Ron and Margo Torkelson of Storden; sister-in-law, Marion Torkelson of Windom; and several nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Slim Kipfer; her parents; two brothers, Don and Charlie Torkelson; and sister-in-law, Edna Torkelson . Blessed be the memory of Betty Lou Kipfer.
