Obituary

A private, family graveside service to honor the life and legacy of Betty Whiteford, age 99, of Westbrook, formerly of Jeffers, will be held in the First Lutheran Cemetery in Dundee.

Betty Mae Whiteford was born on September 20, 1926, in Heron Lake, Minnesota to the late Emil A. and Caroline L. (Lydtke) Horkey. She was baptized in June of 1928 and later confirmed in 1941 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Jeffers. Betty received her early education in District 19 in Oaks Lake and later graduated from Westbrook High School in the Class of 1943.

On September 30, 1944, she was united in marriage to Donald E. Whiteford at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior. This marriage would be blessed with five children. After marriage, Donald and Betty farmed for 39 years until Donald's declining health forced them to retire. Donald passed away in 1997. For many years after Donald's death, Betty remained on the farm. More recently, Betty became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Westbrook. She remained there until passing away in the early morning hours of October 24, 2025, at the age of 99 years.

Betty was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Jeffers and the Jeffers Senior Citizens for many years. Betty enjoyed gardening, the farm, embroidery, baking and in her earlier years, mowing lawns.

Betty is survived by her three children, Barbara Pohlman of Lakefield; Donna (Duane) Waltman-Belt of Omaha, NE; Carolyn Kostecki of Jeffers; daughter-in-law, Paulette Whiteford of Windom; 8 grandchildren; 1 step-granddaughter; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Whiteford; son, Dennis Whiteford; an infant daughter; sisters, Viola Horkey, Ruby Stover, Florence Duncan,  Neva Tomschin and their spouses; brothers, George, Floyd, Lloyd, Clarence, Howard, and Gordon Horkey and their spouses; sons-in-law, Paul Pohlman and Steve Kostecki.
