Dennis Jerome Gustad was born on March 2, 1938, in Storden Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota to the late Haakon and Emma (Bartz) Gustad. He was baptized and confirmed at the Old Westbrook Lutheran Church in rural Storden. Dennis received his education in the Jeffers Public Schools where he graduated in the Class of 1956. He then went on to Nettleton's Commercial College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for two years. In 1961, Dennis enlisted in the United States Navy where he served his country honorably until being honorably discharged in 1965. He then returned to the Storden area and worked for several different individuals in the area along with carpentry work and combining. In 1988, Dennis suffered a stroke. After rehabilitation, he was able to live at home with the care of his mother Emma until Emma's health declined. He then became a resident of the Minnesota Veteran's Home in Luverne, Minnesota where he received excellent care. On August 19, 2010, Dennis passed away there at the age of 72. Dennis was a member of the Old Westbrook Lutheran Church in rural Storden, VFW Post 5098 of Westbrook and the Odeggard-Quade American Legion Post 401 of Jeffers. He will be remembered for loving all of his mail he would receive and being a "Jack of all trades, a master of none". Dennis had many enjoyments in life which included fishing, hunting, leather work, bingo, reading Louis L'Amour books and most of all, his family. Dennis is survived by his one brother and two sisters, Dale Gustad and his wife, Sandy, of Lamberton; Donna Swenson of Jeffers; Delores Ewy and her husband, Donald, of Westbrook; many nieces, nephew, great-nieces and nephews; and a host of very close staff and friends at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. Dennis is preceded in death by his parents. Blessed be the memory of Dennis Jerome Gustad.
