She attended private school and graduated with the class of 1951 from St. Augustine High School in Austin, Minnesota. After graduation, Dolores began working in the office at a commercial laundry business.

Dolores was united in marriage to Howard Nielsen on April 21, 1956, at Saint Augustine Catholic Church. Together they moved to Jackson, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with three children, Joel, Paul, and Joy. Dolores loved being a mother and a homemaker. Dolores enjoyed sewing, making many of the kids' clothes and quilting with the church quilting club. As her children grew, Dolores worked at Dueber's Department Store in the housewares and sewing department. She was a longtime member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. One of Dolores greatest joys in life was her grandchildren. Dolores and Howie loved traveling across the country to visit grandchildren.
