Obituary

Donna Mae Hanson was born on August 23, 1934, to the late Roland and Helen (Wray) Smith, in Heron Lake, MN. Her early education was in a country school in Southbrook Township, Cottonwood County. She then attended Heron Lake High School and graduated with the Class of 1952. Donna worked for a short time as a telephone operator. She was united in marriage to David Hanson on November 22, 1953, at the United Methodist Church in Heron Lake. This marriage was blessed with three daughters, Jayne, Christine and Sandra. After David's discharge from the military, Donna and David farmed side-by-side in Southbrook Township, until 1966, when they purchased their farm and began farming in Springfield Township. In the fall of 1995, they retired from active farming. David passed away February 18, 2000. After his death, Donna continued to live on the farm and took great pride in maintaining the acreage for her family to enjoy. Recently, her health made it necessary to be placed in hospice care. Donna was admitted to the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, where she passed away, surrounded by her daughters, early Thursday morning, May 6, 2022, at the age of 87 years. Donna was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Heron Lake where she was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Cottonwood County Home Extension. Donna had many enjoyments in her life which included sewing, crocheting, embroidery, playing piano, collecting old music, family gatherings, traveling and family genealogy. Left to cherish Donna's memory are her three children, Jayne (Thomas) Miranowski of Heron Lake; Christine (Mark Buss) Anderson of Marshall, MN; Sandra (Michael) Griese of Mountain Lake, MN; six grandchildren, Travis, Valerie, Timothy, Scott, Ashley, and Tamra; three step-grandchildren, Jesse, Spencer and Scott; two great-grandchildren; six great-step-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean (Ken) Swenson of Marshfield, WI; Patricia (Gordy) Peters of Burnsville, MN; and several nieces and nephews. Donna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David Hanson; great-granddaughter, Winnie Struck; sister, Marie and her husband, Ed Legg; three sisters-in-law and their husbands; and four brothers-in-law and their wives.
