Doris Virginia Bell Remund, daughter of Nelson (Nick) J. and Luella J. (Johnson) Bell, was born April 30, 1928 in Windom, Minnesota. Except for twelve years, Doris lived her entire life in Windom. Her maternal ancestors were early homesteaders by Dutch Charley Creek in Cottonwood County as well as charter members of the Old Westbrook Lutheran Church. Doris was proud of her Norwegian heritage, going to Norway to meet relatives and see the original family land. Both of her parents grew up in Windom, and for twenty-eight years her father served as Cottonwood County Sheriff, so Doris often joked that she spent her formative years living in a jail because the sheriff's residence and jail were housed in one building. Education was important to Doris throughout her life. In 1946 she graduated from Windom High School as a National Honor Society member and class valedictorian. In 1950 she graduated from the University of Minnesota, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree with Distinction. It meant a lot to Doris that her mother had also graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1916. Both women were lifelong members of the U of M Alumni Association. While attending the U of M Doris met James William Remund and following graduation they were married on August 12, 1950 at the United Methodist Church in Windom. For several years before and after Jim served in the Korean War, they both taught in Brewster, Minnesota. During the years Jim practiced law in Faribault, MN Doris taught at the University of Minnesota Southern School of Agriculture in Waseca, MN. Providing other women with educational opportunities was very important to her. Doris (along with her mother and daughter) was a member of P.E.O. and AAUW. P.E.O. (In which Doris was a 72-year member) is a women's organization dedicated to supporting opportunities for women's educational advancement, and the American Association of University Women advances equity for women through advocacy, education, research, and philanthropy. Another facet of education that Doris valued was travelling. Throughout their lives she and Jim traveled around the United States and to other countries where they enjoyed seeing places, visiting with people, and learning about history and cultures. Doris also enjoyed attending concerts and plays, as well as visiting museums. In her later years when she watched more television, she still valued learning via her favorite channels PBS, History, Discovery, Travel, and National Geographic. Doris' faith was also an important part of her life. She was baptized and confirmed in the Windom Evangelical Lutheran Church. For many years she was active in the American Lutheran Church in Windom, serving on committees, participating in study groups, and volunteering in church outreach activities. Doris also participated in a variety of hobbies. One passion she developed as a teenager and continued throughout her life was playing bridge. She played bridge with her family, with college friends, in women's groups, and with Jim and other couples. For many decades Doris golfed with friends and family at the Windom Country Club and in Arizona while escaping Minnesota winters. Throughout her life family and friends were the recipients of countless beautifully knitted, sewn, and cross-stitched creations, as well as countless delicious meals and treats. And most importantly, Doris loved being part of her family's activities and special occasions. Some examples include: travelling to Europe, Scandinavia, Alaska, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, Lake Mille Lacs, and the Twin Cities where she took great pleasure in celebrating birthdays, attending weddings, watching sports events, golfing, boating, attending plays and concerts, and sight-seeing with her family. Doris was living at home when she suddenly became ill on November 10, 2019. She was taken to Windom Area Health and subsequently to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD where she passed away on November 11, 2019 at the age of 91. Doris' grateful family includes children: Barbara, Martin (Laura), Daniel (Patricia), and Lawrence (Suzanne); grandchildren: Meredith (Jason), Matthew (Joelle), Melissa (Algin), Lewis (Danielle), Jesse (Tracy), Joli, Chelsey (Reise), Tony (Brenna), and Zachary; great-grandchildren: Cain, James, Dominic, Lily, Jada, Eddy, Charlie, and Malia; and her brother Thomas Bell (Elizabeth). Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her husband James William Remund, and her sister Janet Garber.
