Obituary

Doris "Peggy" Belle (Bass) Onken, age 94, of Mt. Lake, and formerly of Windom passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2020, at The Village in Mt. Lake. Doris was born on October 12, 1926, in Worthington, MN, to the late Ray Virgil and Amalia Marie (Steffen) Bass and was baptized and later confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rost Township. Peggy attended grade school in various country schools in Jackson county and graduated from Sioux Valley in 1944 and then later attended Worthington Community College. Peggy and Walt were united in marriage on February 22, 1946, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. After marriage, Peggy and Walt and their young family started farming in Ewington Township and in 1952 moved to their farm north of Windom. For 45 years, Peggy helped Walt on the farm, making it become a profitable place to raise a loving family. In early autumn of 1997, Peggy and Walt moved to Windom due to Walt's declining health. In 2010, they moved to Mt. Lake where Walt was a resident of the Good Samaritan Society The Village for a short time. They decided to remain in Mt. Lake and Peggy stayed after Walt passed away on March 12, 2011. In December of 2018, Peggy moved to The Lodge in Mt. Lake. Recovering from a broken leg and surgery, she moved to The Village in Mt. Lake in August 2020 deciding to make it her permanent home. Peggy enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing, and later enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and writing stories of her growing up years with her brothers. While living in Windom, Peggy was a long-time member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior where she was a member of the Ladies Aide and Circle. She was also a member of the Great Bend Township Homemakers Club. Peggy and Walt also enjoyed being members of the local heart support group.
