Dorothy Marie Maras was born on November 29, 1923 in Windom, Minnesota to the late Roy Gasley and Ruth Alvina Ernestine (Holtz) Twait. She was baptized on January 27, 1924 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Delafield Township, Jackson County, Minnesota and received her education in country school. Dorothy was confirmed on May 15, 1938, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Windom. Through the years, Dorothy lived in four different places in Jackson County, Minnesota. On February 23, 1946, Dorothy was united in marriage to Raymond Joseph Maras at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom. Dorothy and Ray started their married life 10 miles north of Windom where they made their home together. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who took a lot of pride in caring for her son, Robert. Dorothy also worked for a glider factory, trucking business with her husband, was the owner/operator of the Jeffers Corner Café along with attending salad bar at the 71 Club in Windom. She also was involved in her community as a member of the Westbrook Lions Club and had many enjoyments in life which included bowling, playing cards-games, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with watching them in their sporting events, gardening, shopping at Kohls for bargains with Kermit, Betty and Norma, fishing, camping and taking care of Robert along with traveling with him. Dorothy will be remembered for her delicious potato salad. Dorothy was a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Jeffers until its closing where she was president of the Altar Society. She then became a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom. In 2011, Dorothy was awarded the Mayor Medal of Honor for Services by Senior Citizens for her care of her son, Robert. Recently, Dorothy became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom where she passed away on Saturday morning, April 4, 2020 at the age of 96 years. Dorothy is survived by her five children, Roger (Jan) Maras of Enderlin, North Dakota; Russell (Gail) Maras of Windom; Ruth Ann (Jack) Determan of Jeffers; Rosemary Sweetman of Redwood Falls; Roy (Sherry) Maras of Wabasso; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; two siblings, Kermit (Betty) Twait of Windom; Norma Schmalz of Monticello; and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Maras on July 29, 1981; two sons, Richard Maras on February 11, 1968 and Robert Maras on September 4, 2011; and one sister, Leona Nelson on May 26, 1995.
