Obituary

Harold Preston Basinger was born June 8, 1927 to Dr Homer and Marion Basinger of Windom, MN. He and his older brother Robert grew up in Windom and graduated from Windom High School. Harold was an athlete, playing basketball and football for the Eagles. Upon graduating in 1945, Harold went into the Navy. He was sent to Dickerson, ND to start classes for the Navy Air Corps. While there he played football for the school. He transferred and continued his Navy training at the University of Wisconsin. He pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1951 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1953. While at the U of M he met Marjorie Mueller, the love of his life. They married on November 17, 1949. In 1954, Harold joined his father's medical practice in Windom as a physician and surgeon where he served his community for nearly 40 years, delivering babies, caring for sick and injured, and operating to save lives. He also served the community of Windom as the county coroner, on the school board, the hospital board, and as a high school football and basketball referee. In 1975, Harold went into the Air Force as Lt. Col. Basinger, MD and served as Chief of Clinical Services at RAF Chicksands, a USAF base just north of London, England for four years. Moving back to Windom in 1979, Harold continued to serve as a medical doctor until his retirement. He also remained in the Air Force Reserves and was called up for duty during operation Desert Storm. Harold loved to fish, camp, cook and eat good food, tell great stories and jokes, watch/play sports and travel extensively. He and Marge lived in and visited over 50 countries. They lived for 4 years near Lisbon, Portugal as missionaries with Christian Associates Int'l operating a guest house, hosting bible studies, and serving in Riverside Int'l Church. Most of all Harold loved God and spending time his family and friends. He and Marge made friends easily and have many around the world. Harold passed away at home peacefully on May 31, 2021 in the loving presence of family. Harold is survived by son Steven (Kristin) Basinger, daughters Robin (Duwayne) Johnson, Carolyn (Jon) Freeman, Meredith Basinger ; grandchildren Karin Basinger, Tyler Johnson, Erin Jacobson, Nathan Basinger, Jennifer Basinger, Hannah Johnson, and Rachael Basinger; and 18 great-grandchildren. He is preceded by his wife Marjorie, his brother Robert Basinger, his son Mark Basinger, daughter Andrea Basinger, grandson Andrew Basinger, and twin great-grandchildren, Josiah and Joshua Johnson. Memorials are preferred to the Missionary Fund at the Mt. Lake Alliance Church, 809 5th Street, PO Box 534, Mt. Lake, MN 56159.
