Duane Orville Dunkelberger was born December 31, 1933, in Mt. Lake, Minnesota, to the late Orville and Gertie (Roll) Dunkelberger. Duane grew up on a farm east of Jeffers and attended Jeffers Baptist Church. Duane graduated from Jeffers High School in 1951. He farmed with his dad after high school. On March 26, 1954, Duane was united in marriage to Verona Buller at Bethel Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake, Minnesota. Their first home together was in Windom, Minnesota. In October of 1954 Duane enlisted in the army. After basic training in Fort Bliss, Texas, he was stationed in Germany as a Heavy Vehicle Driver and was tasked with fueling tanks. After a year Verona moved to Germany to be with him. For the next 10 months they took advantage of living in Europe by traveling in Germany, Holland, and France. Duane was honorably discharged from the army in August 1956. While traveling back from Germany, Duane and Verona were able to see the sights in Washington, DC, before returning to Minnesota to farm and begin their family. They lived on several different farms over the years in the Mt. Lake and Jeffers areas before purchasing their own farm near Jeffers where they lived for the next 54 years. Farming, tractors, motorcycles, and airplanes were some of Duane's favorite things. He had his pilots license and co-owned an airplane with a friend. Duane regularly attended the yearly Windom fly-in at the airport. He enjoyed talking to the owners about their planes and watching the landings and take-offs. A long-time member at the Immanual Mennonite Church in Delft, Minnesota, Duane served in many different roles over the years. He was also a member of the Delft Elevator Board, The Farmers Union, the Country Pride Board, and the Cenex Board. He enjoyed camping and boating, and took many fishing trips to Canada with family and friends over the years. Additionally, Duane and Verona took trips to Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, Hawaii for their 25th Anniversary, and traveled to visit their children in South Carolina, Arkansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Duane retired in 1998, and enjoyed helping his son, Brian, with the farm work whenever possible. In recent years Duane and Verona attended the Windom Evangelical Free Church. February 14, 2019, Duane moved into the Veteran's Home in Luverne, Minnesota, where he left this life to be with the Lord on July 25, 2021. Preceding Duane in death were his parents, Orville and Gertie Dunkelberger; brother, Dennis Dunkelberger; sister, Ruth Ann Dunkelberger; brother, Ronald Dunkelberger; sister-in-law Bev Dunkelberger; sister-in-law, Rhonda Dunkelberger; and brother-in-law, Larry Olsen. Duane is survived by his wife of 67 years; children: Larry (Rita) Dunkelberger of Fayetteville, AR; Brian (Jan) Dunkelberger of Eau Claire, WI; and Lori (Orlando) Nelson of Hartford, SD; grandchildren: Brad (Becky) Dunkelberger of Springdale, AR; Kristi (Matt) Byford of St. Louis, MO; Brandon Dunkelberger of Fayetteville, AR; Emily Nelson of Hartford, SD; Jacob Nelson of Hartford, SD; one great-grandchild: Isaac Dunkelberger of Springdale, AR; brother, Melvin Dunkelberger of Louisville, KY; and sister, Dona Olsen of Windom, MN.
