Obituary

Erma Hildegarde (Miller) Knutson, 101, of Heron Lake, formerly of Windom, passed away on February 10, 2021 at Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake. Erma was the daughter, and oldest child of Jacob H. Miller and Hildegarde (Schweitzer) Miller. She was born on April 11, 1919 in Delft. Her brother Lester Miller was born in 1922. Her father owned and operated a harness and shoe repair shop in Delft, which was a thriving community in the 1920's. Erma attended elementary school in Delft and eventually graduated from Windom High School in 1938. After High School she went on to complete teacher's training in Lamberton, earning her teaching certificate in 1939. She then taught in rural schools for three years. On August 31, 1941, Erma married Lowell G. Knutson. They farmed north of Heron Lake in Springfield township until 1969 when they moved to a farm in Great Bend township just outside of Windom. Lowell retired from farming in 1981 and they built a house in Windom where Lowell continued to work as a rural mail carrier. When her sons were all in school Erma took off-campus classes and received her degree in Education from Mankato State University in 1973. She substituted in several area schools and then worked as a Title I teacher at Storden-Jeffers Elementary School for 6 years. She retired in 1984. Erma grew up attending the Immanuel Mennonite Church in Delft and after her marriage became a long-time member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Heron Lake where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. Later she became a member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom, serving on many committees over the years. She had a keen interest in politics and current events, genealogy, music, education and reading. She was a frequent visitor to the public library and attended many athletic events that her sons and grandchildren participated in over the years. Lowell died in December of 2000 and Erma moved to the Windom Good Samaritan Campus, first to Remick Ridge in January of 2001, and then to Mikkelsen Manor in the summer of 2008. In September of 2019 she was transferred to Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake. Erma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lowell, and her brother Lester. Survivors include her four sons, Terry, of Sioux Falls, SD, Dane (LeeAnn) Sioux Falls, Les (Cheryl) Heron Lake, and Kyle (Louise), Edina; 7 grandchildren 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Private Family Memorial Service will be held at a later date and burial will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.
