Florence Marie Behrens Flossie, as she was known, was born August 12, 1928, to Adrian & Viola (Smith) Bochman in Cottonwood County, growing up on a farm "nine miles east of Windom on the Jackson County line". She attended country school and wanting to attend high school, moved to Windom, living her freshman year with a friend of her mothers. This is where she learned to hate green beans, as the lady served them about five times per week. The next two years, she lived with four other young women, in a little house on the east hill. During the winter, there was so much snow, they had to crawl out an upstairs window, before clearing the snow from the front door. To support herself during this time, she worked in the dining room of the Basinger Hotel, serving lunch and dinner during the week and working Saturday and Sunday, dinner and supper. After graduation, Flossie worked as a telephone operator, where she met Art Behrens. They married on February 23, 1947. They raised two children, Lowell and Jo, while farming east of Windom and near Jeffers, before moving to Wilder to open Behrens Livestock, where Flossie was a partner and the bookkeeper. Flossie enjoyed having a LARGE garden with dozens of vegetables and fruits, like strawberries, raspberries, rhubarb, and apples. All of which needed to be taken care of, planting, weeding, harvesting, canning, freezing, and baking. She also taught Sunday school, was twice president of the Ladies' Aid, bowled, and in her spare time, worked evenings as a waitress at Happy Chef and later as a secretary for Ruenitz & Gudmestad and Fairland Farm Management. In 1984, Flossie started working for the Windom Chamber of Commerce as a secretary and became the executive in 1989. She spent many hours clipping around town in her high heels collecting dues from Chamber members and helping set up decorations for "A Dicken's Christmas" on the "square". With Art's health failing, they moved into Windom in 1995. After retiring from the Chamber, Flossie took a part-time job doing bookkeeping for Trotter Livestock. After Art passed away in 2002, she continued working for about another year before retiring a second time. In 2003, Flossie was awarded the Mayor's Medal of Honor. Flossie lived at Mikkelsen Manor before moving to memory care close to Jo in the Twin Cities. She passed away on December 2, 2021, after declining memory and a brief illness. She is survived by her children, Lowell (Donna Sogge) Behrens and Jo (Bob) Norell; five grandchildren, Rachelle (Joel) Broveleit, Rebecca (Jerry) Sorum, Rhona (Jeff) Peabody, Andy (Colleen) Norell, Stephanie (Andrew) Smith; eleven great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Irene Bochman, Dora Behrens, and Evelyn Dean. Besides her parents, Flossie was preceded in death by her husband, Art, three siblings, Leland (Bud) Bochman, Dorothy (Dot) Mitchell, and Ruth Brewer.
