A Celebration of Life Service to honor the life and legacy of Fred Meyer, age 83, of Windom will be held Thursday, August 15th at 10:00 AM at the LaCanne Family Celebration of Life Center in Windom with Pastor Sarah Larsen Tade officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Windom with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 206 of Windom.

A time of visitation and gathering will be held on Wednesday, August 14th from 4:00 -7:00 PM at the LaCanne Family Celebration of Life Center in Windom. Visitation will continue Thursday, for one hour prior to the service, from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM, at the LaCanne Family Celebration of Life Center in Windom.

Fred William Meyer was born on July 30, 1941, on his family farm near Ceylon, Minnesota, to the late Ernest J. Meyer and Viola (Diekmann) Meyer. Fred attended country school and graduated high school in 1960 from Sherburn, Minnesota. After graduation, he farmed with his father and brother until he joined the Army National Guard in 1961. He retired in July of 2001 and always used to say, "I served 31 years, 7 months, and 26 days", which always brought a laugh from his friends.

On a summer evening in 1967, Fred was cruising "the loop" in Fairmont, Minnesota, when he spotted his wife, Mary (Sprague) Meyer in a different vehicle. He stopped the car she was in and asked her to go out on a date. After courting, they later married on January 27, 1968, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. In 1975, they moved to Windom, where Fred worked at a variety of jobs, including Nasby Construction where he put up grain bins, Dicks Welding, and he worked at Toro for 19 years. Fred went on to start his own construction business with his son Mark and finally retired in 2013.

In Fred's younger years, he enjoyed playing catcher in fast pitch softball, bowling where he served as president of the men's bowling league in Worthington, Minnesota, playing men's league golf in Westbrook, and he served as the Commander in Chief of the Windom American Legion Post #206 for the past 12 years. Fred took great honor in preparing the Memorial Day and Veterans Day programs each year. He also enjoyed sitting on the end of the dock on a five-gallon pail fishing on Fish Lake. Recently Fred has enjoyed playing with his great-grandchildren and watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

On August 10, 2024, Fred was working at the Cottonwood County Fair doing what he loved. He suddenly passed away later that day at Windom Area Health in Windom, at the age of 83 years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Meyer of Windom; three children, John, Mark, and Lisa (Meyer) Vollan of Windom; three grandchildren, Maitland (Vollan) Maras and husband Daniel of Windom, Kaila (Meyer) Bergstad and husband Matt Bergstad of Austin, MN, and Kelsey (Vollan) Nielsen and husband Devin Nielsen of Windom; four great-grandchildren, Lukas, Quinn, Trigg, and Millie; brother-in-law, Lowell Voigt of northern MN; sister-in-law, Geraldine Meyer Senne of Jackson; as well as many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Viola; three brothers, Martin, Glenn, and Clifford; two sisters, Rosella "Rosie" (Meyer) Senne, and Shirley (Meyer) Voigt; brother-in-law, Lloyd Senne; son-in-law, Lonny Vollan; and many other aunts and uncles.

If Fred had one last wish, he would tell you to save your quarters and go play some bingo.
