Grace Severson passed away peacefully on Friday, February 4th at the Good Samaritan Society- Sogge Memorial in Windom.
Grace Lena (Rudolph) Severson was born on March 25, 1935, to Louis A and Lena A (Tietz) Rudolph in Alton Township. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville, MN.
Grace attended first grade at country school. After the school closed, she attended elementary school at Janesville Public School and a Lutheran parochial school. Grace graduated with the Janesville High School class of 1953. She enrolled at Mankato State University (MSU) and at that time earned a 2 2/3-year degree in elementary education. In 1960, she earned a B.S. degree, and later continued at MSU earning a B.S. plus 45.
Grace was a second-grade teacher for 3 years in Kenyon, MN, and then taught third grade at Winfair Elementary School for 36 years. Grace loved teaching and her favorite quote by Katharine Graham was, "To love what you do and feel that it matters- how could anything be more fun?" Grace retired from teaching in May 1995, after 39 years in the classroom. Grace was always delighted to watch children grow up and become responsible citizens.
Grace married Richard "Dick" A. Severson on June 9, 1962, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville, MN. This union was blessed with one daughter, Kathy. Grace loved that Kathy followed in her footsteps, pursuing a career in elementary education. The couple made their home in Windom for 56 years.
Grace was a longtime member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #206 in Windom, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed "Birthday Club" with the girls, golfing, cooking, reading, and doing Sudoku puzzles. The biggest joys in her life were spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren.
After retirement, Dick and Grace remained in Windom and spent many winters in Texas. As Winter Texans, they loved swimming in the pool, golfing, taking day trips into Mexico and going to dances in their park.
Grace is survived by her loving daughter, Kathy, and husband Ryan Nielsen of Lynd, MN; and three grandchildren, Aaron, Grant, and Sarah; and nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Severson; parents, Louis & Lena Rudolph; sisters, Harriet (Harold) Langenberg and Arnnetta Skelton.
Blessed be the memory of Grace Severson.
