Harold Ray Caviness was born on May 21, 1930, to the late Ralph and Grace (Palmer) Caviness, in Lakefield, Minnesota. At a young age, he was baptized in the United Methodist Church in Lakefield and attended United Methodist Church in Windom.
Harold attended Lakefield High School and earned his GED. In 1948, Harold enlisted in the United States Army. In the army, he was a Master Sergeant E8 and worked as a helicopter mechanic. Throughout his 20-year military career, he was stationed and lived in Austria, Germany, Iran, Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Washington D.C., and Vietnam. On January 31, 1969, Harold retired from the US Army with 20 years of military service. He made Windom his permanent home after his retirement.
On July 16, 1951, Harold was united in marriage to Myra JoAnn Chrislock, in International Falls, Minnesota. The couple was blessed with four children, Ray, Randy, David and Janice. After retiring from the military, Harold was self-employed with Windom Radiator and Caviness Auto. He later worked as a bus driver for Windom Area Schools.
Harold served as President of the Windom Lions Club and was a member of the Windom American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he loved to travel in his motorhome. Harold always had an interest in farming, wildlife and conservation and was part of the Caraway State Wildlife Management Cooperative Project. He and Myra also were members of Jackson County Pheasants Forever and supported the MN Environmental & Natural Resources Trust Fund.
Harold passed away on Tuesday, September 6th at the Good Samaritan Society- Sogge Memorial in Windom.
Harold is survived by his wife of 71 years, Joann Caviness of Windom; four children, Ray Caviness of Chandler, AZ, Randy (Cathy) Caviness of Burnsville, MN, David Caviness of Windom, and Janice Caviness; eight grandchildren, Jason, Amber, Kelly, Shana, Brady, Cally, Ashley and Robert; five great-grandchildren; two siblings, Joyce (Darrell) Nissen of Lakefield, and Richard Caviness of Waconia; as well as many relatives and friends.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Grace; siblings, Glenn Caviness, Evelyn and Art Freer, and Darrell and Irene Caviness; and sister-in-law, Peggy Caviness.

A private, graveside service for Harold Caviness, age 92, of Windom, will be held at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
