Harold Edward Shelstad was born on March 23, 1932 in Madison, Minnesota to the late Adolph and Ethel (Henrickson) Shelstad. He graduated from Lac Qui Parle Country School and attended the University of Minnesota, Morris. On June 28, 1950, Harold was united in marriage to Lois LuJean (Johnson) Shelstad in Madison. After marriage, they lived in Alaska while Harold was in the military. They then moved to Illinois and then back to Minnesota where they lived in several places throughout Minnesota until moving to Windom in the early 1970's. Harold worked as a Bridge Foreman for the State of Minnesota for 30 years, until retiring in 1982. After forty-five years in Windom, Harold and Lois moved to Fairmont to be closer to family. Recently, Harold became a resident of Goldfinch Estates Memory Care in Fairmont, where he passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at the age of 89 years. Harold was a longtime member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Bergen where he served the "Over 80" supper, was active in the church grounds keeping, president of the church cemetery association, made Communion bread and was an usher. Harold was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous for many years. Harold loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Harold enjoyed hunting and fishing and made trips "up north" with his buddies for a yearly fishing trip. He also enjoyed watching the wildlife on their farm. There could be more than a dozen or so deer feeding just outside the window of their home. He enjoyed woodworking, making many pieces of outdoor and indoor stools and benches that some of the family enjoys using to this day. Though the years, Harold brought home many pets, including dogs, cats and even a Shetland pony! Harold is survived by his devoted family of four children, Lyndon Shelstad of Fairmont; Gail (Mike) Mann of Saint Albans, West Virginia; Karen Shelstad of Fairmont and Raymond Shelstad of Fairmont; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Harold is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois Shelstad; son and daughter-in-law, David & Laurita Shelstad; two sisters, Muriel Fossen and Virginia Rowe.
