Helen Ann Haugen was born in Belmont Township, Jackson County, Minnesota on January 5, 1931, to the late John and Anna (Wieskus) Maras. She was baptized on January 8, 1931, in Jackson County and later confirmed. Helen received her early education in country school in Dale Township and then attended Windom Public Schools, graduating from Windom High School on May 27, 1948.
On May 3, 1952, Helen was united in marriage to Howard Rollin Haugen at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom. This marriage was blessed with four children, Michelle, Michael, Mari, and Melissa. Through the years, Helen worked as the bookkeeper at Farm Bureau in Windom and in 1974, began working at the First National Bank in Windom where she met many people and formed many lifelong relationships in her twenty-seven dedicated years of service until her retirement in 2001. After retirement, Howard and Helen continued to live in Windom and enjoyed retirement together. On March 21, 2005, Howard passed away after a short illness. After his death, Helen remained in her home in Windom and had many enjoyable years with her family and friends. Recently, Helen was placed in hospice care in her home and passed away there peacefully, with her family at her side, on Thursday, February 18, 2021, at the age of 90 years.
Helen was a longtime, dedicated member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom where she was a Steward at the church until 2020, helped with the Knights of Columbus Food Stand at the Cottonwood County Fair and was a vital part of the funeral lunches at the church for many years. She also was involved in her community as a volunteer at the Windom Chamber of Commerce, helped with bloodmobiles, a volunteer for the Fire Department mailings, a BARC usher for concerts and was named the Volunteer of the Year in 2016 by the Windom Chamber of Commerce. Her enjoyments were many and included bowling and being a part of the 600 Bowling Club, watching the Minnesota Gophers and the Minnesota Twins, and most of all, she really enjoyed any sport her grandchildren were participating in and loved supporting them. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mom, grandma, and great grandma who always made time for her family and loved her time spent with them.
Helen is survived by her four children and their spouses, Michelle (Doug) Groenke of Mankato; Michael (Kera) Haugen of Windom; Mari (Ben) Byam of Windom; Melissa (Brent) Christopher of Jackson; 12 grandchildren, Erin (Joel) Jacobson, Brent and Cody Groenke, Karissa (Bryce) Grove, Morgan (Cole) Wunschel, Drake (Meredith) Borsgard, Bryce Christopher, Taylor (Erica) Christopher, Ryan Christopher, Wyatt, Wriley and Reagan Haugen; two great-grandchildren, Haley and Jonah Jacobson; four siblings, Paul (Gerry) Maras of Windom; Rose Schwalbach of Windom; Kathy (Henry) Grothaus of Oakdale; Ed (Pat) Maras of Urbandale, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Haugen; five brothers, Ray, John, Isadore, Daniel "Mike" and Joe Maras; two sisters, Arlene Bartosh and Gladys Wiens; and one grandson, Bronson Byam.
