Helen Louise
Showers
Mar 29, 1933 — Jan 7, 2025
Helen Louise (Vachuska) Showers was born March 29, 1933, to the late Frank and Irene (Benson) Vachuska in Jackson, Minnesota. After attending Jackson Schools, Helen worked as a Nurse Aide at the Halloran Hospital in Jackson. Later she worked as a bookkeeper for more than 30 years at Jackson Radiator Shop and Jackson Communications Center.
Helen was united in marriage to Marvin Showers, and the couple was blessed with three children. After the children were grown, Helen owned and operated Helen's Gift Shop at Tucson Estates in Tucson, Arizona. Customers could find Arizona themed souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, puzzles, yarn and her personally crocheted gift items. She designed a unique crochet slipper pattern that was the most sought-after item by the returning customers from across the United States, as well as international visitors.
Her love of owning a gift shop came after managing a gift shop in Old Tucson, a movie studio and theme park replicating an Old West desert town. Many movies were filmed there, and she met several well-known film personalities. Her favorites were Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Elizabeth Taylor, who were filming the movie, Three Amigos. Each would visit her shop and have a cup of coffee during film breaks. One day, she and the other store managers were dressed in Old West attire and filmed as shopkeepers in the movie.
Upon Marvin's death, she moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota, to live with her daughter, Kathy and son-in-law, Kevin. She and Kathy took many motorcoach tours throughout the states making a scrapbook of each tour. Helen enjoyed volunteering at the Whitney Senior Center for seven years. She was an avid iPad user and even at 91 years, she could complete several challenging jigsaw puzzles on her iPad in a few hours.
In 2022, Helen moved to Cherrywood Advanced Living in St. Cloud. She lived there until her death on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
Helen is survived by her children, Kathleen (Kevin) Gilbride of St. Cloud, and Kevin Showers of St. Cloud; three grandchildren, Angela Showers, A.J. Showers and Andria Showers; sisters, SuzAnne Kolander of Jackson and Carol Voss of Lake Park, IA; as well as relatives and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Showers; son, Kerry Lee Showers; parents, Frank and Irene Vachuska; brother, Frank (Yvonne) Vachuska; sisters, Irene (Darrell) Caviness and Dorothy Mayberry.
A private family graveside service will be held at the Riverside Cemetery in Jackson.
Helen Showers passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 7th at Cherrywood Assisted Living in Saint Cloud.
