Herman Henry Eigenberg was born on February 5, 1931, on the family farm in Springfield Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota. He was the son of William F. and Augusta (Toltzin) Eigenberg. Herman was baptized on March 5, 1931, at home. He was confirmed on May 19, 1946, at St. John's Lutheran Church where he remained a lifelong member, holding various offices. He attended country school District #17, in Springfield Township, grades 1-6 and grades 7-12 at Heron Lake High School, graduating from there on June 1, 1950. He remained at home working on the family farm. Herman joined the National Guards in June of 1948. In January of 1951, his unit was called to active duty due to the Korean War. They were stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama. While home on leave in the fall of 1951, a young lady walked into his life and their friendship blossomed. He was honorably discharged in May of 1952, where upon he returned home and continued working on the family farm. In October 1952 he asked Lylas Comnick to be his wife. They were united in marriage on July 5, 1953, at Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook, MN. The couple moved to the original family farm living in the house where Herman was born. They were blessed with five children whom they raised there, attending church and Sunday School regularly. Herman was a family man, enjoying going to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's activities and family get togethers. Herman's interests were gardening, fishing in the ponds, antique tractors and farm shows, polka music and word sleuths. A high point of his life was a trip to Germany visiting five cousins, learning, and also seeing some of his family history of the shoe shop where his grandparents, his mother, Augusta and her siblings lived upstairs. At the age of 80 Herman and Lylas retired and moved to Windom on October 9, 2010. His son and grandson took over the farming operation. Herman returned often to help with work and work on his hobbies. He was a wonderful, loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be greatly missed. Herman is survived by his loving wife, Lylas Eigenberg of Heron Lake; five children, Russell (Jeanne) Eigenberg of Farmington, Deborah (Steven) Sumey of Fairmont, Doreen Iverson of Clayton, WI, Bryan (Lois) Eigenberg of Windom, and Lori (David) Ling of Windom; grandchildren, Eric (Suzanne) Eigenberg, Sara (Peter) Wenstad, Christopher (Katie) Sumey, Benjamin (Kimberly) Sumey, Michael (Megan Schierenbeck) Sumey, Daniel Sumey, Jessica Kesterson, Alisha (Jason) Anderson, Ashley (Joshua) Gurgel, Matthew Iverson, Dustin Eigenberg, Darci (Derek) Jones, Amber (Jessy) Grove, Coleman (Valerie) Ling, Dalton Ling, Shelby (Chase) Rovere; great-grandchildren, Kayley Eigenberg, Andrew, Alexander, Zachary, Isaac, Elliot Wenstad, Elijah, Kirsa, Ingrid Sumey, Graham, Violet, Penelope Kesterson, Henry, Levi, Lyla Sumey, Owen, Samuel, Nolan Anderson, Mallory, Calvin, Dexter Gurgel, Dawson, Reese Jones, Caleb, Silas, Danika Ling, Brayden Grove; one brother, Willian (Carolyn) of Windom; one sister, Gisela Kuehl of Fulda; two sisters-in-law, LaDonna Berger of Worthington, Janet Comnick of Tucson, AZ and one brother-in-law, Larry Comnick of Worthington. He also leaves to mourn a host of relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Herbert; one son-in-law, Bruce Iverson; four brothers-in-law, Gilbert Berger, Lanny Comnick, LeRoy Comnick, Kornell Kuehl and two sister-in-law, Shirley Comnick and Barbara Eigenberg. A Celebration of Life Service for Herman Eigenberg, age 90, of Heron Lake, formerly of Windom, will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 13th, at the St. John's Lutheran Church, in Okabena, with Reverend James Albrecht officiating. Burial will follow at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Okabena, with full military honors. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 12th, at the LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom and on Saturday, November 13th for one-hour prior to the service at the church in Okabena. Herman Eigenberg passed away on Sunday, November 7th at Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake, MN. Funeral arrangements are under the care of the LaCanne Family Funeral Service in Windom.
