Obituary

Jack Milo Steinke was born on March 18, 1923, in Rembrandt, Iowa, the son of Leo and Emma Steinke. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Windom, Minnesota, graduating in the Class of 1940. He attended a welding school in Minneapolis for a short time before joining the U.S. Army Air Corp Service Squadron 348, serving in Syria, North Africa, and Italy. He attained the rank of staff sergeant in his battalion known as "The Desert Rats." After returning to the states, he married Nancy L. Hill in Lakeland, Florida, on October 14, 1945. They had met at a church youth meeting while he was stationed there before going overseas. They moved back to Windom where he worked for a contractor, Art Vold, before taking over the farm from his father. He farmed until 2012. Jack and Nancy spent their winters at the Lake Morton Apartments in Lakeland, Florida for thirty years. Jack enjoyed walking around the lake and visiting the flea markets where he could add to his tool collection. He was a "jack of all trades" and taught himself plumbing, electrical wiring, carpentry, mechanics, and welding. He accepted Christ at a Billy Graham Crusade in Windom when he was a young man. He was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Windom where he was a member and served for a time as an usher. He is survived by his two daughters, Karen (Larry) Reader of Cumberland, Kentucky, and Judith (David) Sloma of Sun City, AZ, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, his brother, Robert Steinke, and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Steinke.
