He was baptized on July 26, 1957, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Jackson and confirmed in that same church on September 12, 1965. Jim received his early education in country school and then attended Jackson Public Schools, graduating from Jackson High School in the Class of 1968. Jim was drafted into the United States Army and served during Vietnam in the 101st Airborne, from May 1, 1969, until being honorably discharged on February 1, 1971.
On April 23, 1977, Jim was united in marriage to Debra Johnson at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Jackson. This marriage was blessed with two children, Jay and Jami. Later, this marriage was dissolved. Jim then met Betty Cromwell and they made their home together in rural Jackson and had 30 wonderful years together. Jim farmed his entire life. He also worked at TORO in Windom for over twenty years, beginning in the early 1990's. Jim was known for his love of farming, gardening, restoring tractors, going to the casino, cooking, and eating, especially meat and potatoes. He also enjoyed helping others and would give doctor appointment rides to many people over the years.
Recently, Jim had brain surgery and was doing well. On Sunday morning, he became suddenly ill at this home in rural Jackson and was brought into the Sanford Jackson Medical Center where he passed away at the age of 73 years.
Jim was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Jackson, as well as the American Legion and VFW Post #130 in Jackson.
