Jan Philippus Wassenaar was born on September 30, 1925 in Weidum, Friesland (Netherlands), to the late Tjeerd and Gelske (Schuiling) Wassenaar and grew up on a dairy farm. After the war, he wanted to experience the U.S.A. as a dairy farmer and within 7 months he arrived at the age of 23. Jan attended college at the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture, worked on several farms and volunteered on a youth farm in Rosthern, Northern Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1953, Jan met Katharina Thiessen who was from the Ukraine. They were united in marriage on March 7, 1954 and soon after started dairy farming near Delft, Minnesota. Between them, they both spoke 7 different languages. Jan was named "Outstanding Young Farmer" in 1960, was very involved in the Immanuel Mennonite Church in Delft, Gideon's, Chaplain for the Windom Service Club, Farm Bureau, 4-H, many dairy organizations, the Dale Township Board, and jail ministry for 22 years. Jan and Katharina led 3 tours to Europe, they also travelled on their own to several other countries throughout the world. Jan lived what people might call the "old style," but cherished the life given to him. He had a generous love for his family, his profession as a farmer, and the many friends he made. Jan still spoke with an accent, but above all, he gave thanks to the Lord for protection, guidance, and the inspiration to go on. Preceding Jan in death were his parents, Tjeerd and Gelske Wassenaar; his wife of 67 years, Katharina Wassenaar; son, Rudy Wassenaar; brother, Johannes Wassenaar; sister-in-law, Sietske Wassenaar; sister, Sjoukje Poelstra; brother-in-law's, Jan Poelstra and Johannes de Groot; and granddaughter Leah's first husband, Greg Pudlick. Jan is survived by his two daughters, Rita (Larry) Dunkelberger of Fayetteville, AR; Irene (Dave) Vagle of Alexandria; daughter-in-law, Carla (Jack) Voss of Lakefield; grandchildren, Dustin (Lindsay) Wassenaar, Kasey (Ryan) Olivier, Brad (Becky) Dunkelberger, Kristi (Matt) Byford, Brandon Dunkelberger, Leah (Chris) Knapton, Kelley (Scott) Mikkelson, and step-grandchild, Melissa Voss, great-grandchildren, Vivian and Evelyn Wassenaar, Isaac Dunkelberger, Myles Knapton, Nora and Louise Mikkelson, and 2 great step-grandchildren, Avaree and Reese Knapton; brother, Reinder Wassenaar (Tjeerdtje), of California, and sister Anneke de Groot, Netherlands. (NIV) A Celebration of Life Service for Jan Wassenaar age 95 of Windom and formerly of Delft will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 8th at the First United Methodist Church in Windom with Pastors Mike McInnis and Merwin Dick officiating. Burial will follow in the Delft Cemetery in Delft. A visitation for Jan will be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 8th at the First United Methodist Church in Windom. Jan Wassenaar passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 1st at the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the First United Methodist Church Facebook Page. Memorials are preferred to the Gideon's.
