A Celebration of Life Service for Janet Hochstein, age 84, of Windom, will be held Friday, May 1st at 10:30 AM at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. Burial will be in Amo Lutheran Cemetery in rural Storden.

A visitation for Janet will be held on Thursday, April 30th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. Visitation will continue Friday, May 1st, at the American Lutheran Church in Windom for one hour prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. The service will be livestreamed on the American Lutheran Church's Facebook page.

Janet Arlene (Mattison) Hochstein was born on February 7, 1942, in Springfield, Minnesota, to Minnerd Julius and Leona Arlene (Quiring) Mattison. She was baptized and confirmed at Highwater Lutheran Church in rural Lamberton and was a longtime member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom. Jan received her early education at a double schoolhouse and later attended Lamberton High School, graduating in 1960.

On June 3, 1962, Jan was united in marriage to David Nerhus. The couple was blessed with three children, Brant, Michelle and Brandi. The Nerhus family made their home in Windom. Jan was a devoted and supportive mother, always encouraging her children in all their many interests and activities. She loved her family deeply, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After 35 years of marriage, David passed away in 1997.

Jan later found companionship with Jerry Lee Hochstein, and the couple was married on August 18, 2007, happily blending their families. Through the marriage, Jan gained another son, Mark Hochstein, and his family.

Over the years, Jan worked Toro, DAC and Loopy's, and she even drove trucks for some time. She was known for being "matter of fact" and never hesitated to speak her mind. She was one of the rare few who truly disliked chocolate. Jan enjoyed woodworking, tending to flowers, watching hummingbirds in her backyard, and travelling whenever she had the chance. From her earlier years, she built a cherished collection of lighthouses.

On Friday, April 24, 2026, Jan passed away peacefully at Golden Horizon's of Worthington, Minnesota.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 19 years, Jerry Hochstein of Windom; daughters, Michelle (Jose) Morales of Magnolia, TX, and Brandi (Blair) Grove) of Windom; daughter-in-law, Jolynn Nerhus of Windom; son, Mark (Shelly) Hochstein of Kasota; 10 grandchildren, Nicole (Nathan) Berghdahl, Ashley Nerhus, Lucas Nerhus, Mateo (Dacia) Morales, Jennifer (Oscar) Villegas, Jerrica (Tony) Jenniges, Skyler (Gus) Shockley, Ashley (Mitch) Palmer, Kaylee (Ali) Grove, and Pablo Morales; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Peggy Mattison, Janet Jensen, and Gloria Hochstein; brother-in-law, Allen Hochstein; as well as several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Minnerd and Leona Mattison; husband, David Nerhus; son Brant Nerhus; siblings, Myron (Lois) Mattison, Luetta (James) Engen, Arlin Mattison, and Dennis (Margie) Mattison.
