Obituary

A Celebration of Life visitation to honor the life and legacy of JoDinna Honken, age 81, of Lakefield, will be held at the United Methodist Church in Lakefield on Monday, December 15th from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Burial will take place following the visitation at Lakefield City Cemetery in Lakefield.

JoDinna "Joey" Rae (Habbena) Honken was born on October 8, 1944, at the Worthington Hospital. Joey attended and graduated from Ellsworth MN High School in the class of 1962.

On May 24, 1963, Joey married Theodore (Ted) A. Honken in Ellsworth, MN. To this marriage were born three children, Theodora, LaShell and Bryce. They proceeded to build a life full of family and special memories. Ted and Joey lived in Adrian, MN until 1986 when they moved to Lakefield to be near their two daughters.

Joey enjoyed working as a waitress, she candled eggs for a while, worked in a turkey hatchery, and most recently as a convenience store clerk part time. But her most favorite position of all was working at Maynards grocery store for over 25 years in Lakefield, MN. Joey loved all the people she would see on a regular basis and was well known for this in the community. No matter what was going on, she always had a smile and something nice to say to all the people she checked out. She was sassy and had an innate ability to go tit for tat with the best smarty pants. She also enjoyed Dr. Pepper, Caramel Candy corn and anything with the word salad in it!

As much as Joey loved working, nothing could beat the unconditional love she had for her family and especially her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren Bennett and Ziggy. It warmed her heart so much to be able to spend time with them no matter how, from shopping to watching sporting events, traveling, to just hanging out. Though her love of being with the kids was most important, Joey would never pass up a trip to the casino, this being one of her favorite past times.

Joey and Ted had many adventures together too, as they enjoyed 57 years of marriage. They traveled to New York twice, enjoying Niagara Falls one year and New York City another time. Another trip to Wine Country for their 25th wedding anniversary, several trips to Rapid City, SD, Kansas City several times, Michigan, and Branson MO as well, always having the time of their lives. But it is with no doubt that being home around family was the most important thing to them.

Joey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls SD.

Joey is survived by her children, Dorie (Luther), Shelly (Alvin) and Bryce. Grandchildren, Brady (Kala), Blaike, Natalie, Nicholas, Olivia, Nelson (Megan). Great grandchildren Ziggy, Bennet, Ryker, Racelynn, Zoey, Hazel and Nellie. Her sister, Dorothy (Dick), sisters in law, Alvira and Pat, favorite niece Kathy and great nephews Audien and Ryler, Jerrico (Jen), and Joshua, and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ted in 2020, her sisters and brothers, Peggy, Sadie, George, John, Johannes, niece Shaunna and grandnephew Brexlee.

Blessed be the memory of Joey Honken.
