A Celebration of Life Service for John Brommer, age 81, of Windom, will be held Monday, May 18th at 11 AM at the LaCanne Family Celebration of Life Center in Windom, with a time of visitation and gathering for one hour prior to the service from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM.

John Brommer passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3rd at Golden Horizons in Worthington, MN.

John Eugene Brommer, age 81, of Windom, MN, passed away on February 3, 2026, at Golden Horizons in Worthington, MN, after battling Alzheimer's disease. He was the son of Berend and Cora (Breeman) Brommer, born in Kanaranzi, MN, and raised in Ellsworth, where he learned the value of hard work, simple living, and strong family ties—principles that guided him throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carol (Klein) Brommer; brothers Bernard "Bernie" Brommer and Robert "Bob" Brommer; and infant sister Marjorie Brommer.

John is survived by his daughter, Amy Brommer Berg, and her husband, Tyler Berg; his sisters Donna (Allen) Wessels, Carol (Larry) Duwenhoegger, and Lisa Brommer; his brother Greg (Marilyn) Brommer; sister-in-law, Phyllis Brommer; and many nieces and nephews.

Following his older brother's lead, John and Carol moved to Windom, where he began his career with MnDOT as a surveyor. In 1984, John and Carol adopted Amy, who immediately became the center of their world. He was a devoted father, and after Carol's passing in 1996, he raised Amy with love, patience, and dedication.

Amy fondly remembers riding with her dad while listening to his favorite country music, especially Johnny Cash, and the time spent in his workshop—building a Barbie castle for her, complete with a bridge, or smashing pop cans to take to the recycling center—moments that reflected his careful hands, inventive mind, and love of simple joys. She also remembers him heading off to work in the morning, coffee thermos in hand.

Over the years, John worked his way up through the ranks at MnDOT and formed many lasting friendships with the crews he worked alongside. Those friendships ran deep—so much so that when it came time to replace the family's long gravel driveway with concrete, his MnDOT crew stepped in. It became a point of pride that the driveway was more level than any highway. John loved maps, route planning, and numbers, a skill that stayed with him throughout his life.

In his early years, John shared many hunting adventures with his brothers. He also enjoyed playing cards and golf, attending bullhead feeds, and socializing with friends, often with a joke or quick comeback. Later in life, he enjoyed walking around Windom for exercise. He took pride in his home, lawn, and the small, practical ways he cared for family and friends.

John lived a steady, purposeful life, finding meaning in his work, pride in caring for his home, and joy in the everyday moments spent with family. He will be remembered for his practicality, dry sense of humor, and the quiet ways he showed up for the people he loved.

In accordance with John's wishes, he will be cremated. The family felt it was only fitting that he be laid to rest and symbolically reunited with his wife, Carol, on their anniversary, May 18th.

Following the burial, family and friends are invited to gather for a lunch and "Toast to John" at one of his favorite places, the Windom Country Club.
