Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Carpenter was born on September 30, 1922 in Mallard, Iowa to the late Gordon and Mary (Duffy) Carpenter. He received his education at the Emmetsburg Catholic Schools; graduating in the Class of 1941. He then attended LORAS College in Dubuque, Iowa where he received a bachelor's degree in Education. Joe enlisted in the United States Army on December 30, 1942 and served his country honorably having reached the rank of Corporal and was part of the Invasion of Sicily until his honorable discharge on November 19, 1945. On February 6, 1954, Joe was united in marriage to Doris Ann Asmussen at the St. Augustine Cathedral in Des Moines, Iowa. This marriage would be blessed with three children, Daniel, Richard and Nancy. After marriage, Joe and Doris lived in Emmetsburg, Iowa and in 1960, they moved to Sheldon, Iowa. In 1962, they moved to Windom and Joe was an insurance agent for an agricultural insurance company. Through the years, Joe was a longtime dedicated member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom where he was a lector. He had many enjoyments in life which included all sports-especially cheering for the Windom Eagle, Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings, having coffee and sweets, ice cream and most of all, spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren. On Saturday, Joe became suddenly ill and was taken to Windom Area Health and remained there until passing away on Monday morning, October 14, 2019 at the age of 97 years. Joe will be greatly missed by his three children, Daniel Carpenter (Deb) of Hastings, MI; Dick Carpenter (Ann) of Northfield; Nancy (Matt) Prunty of Welcome; seven grandchildren, Eric (Kara) Carpenter, Katie Heronimus (Tanner), Kelly (Jason) Gabel, Calli Peabody (Nathan), Maggie (Mason) Braden, Adam and Abby Carpenter, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Joe is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris on February 11, 2004; one grandson, Bradley Prunty; two sisters and six brothers.
