Obituary

LaVern Christianson, age 80 of Windom, passed away on Saturday afternoon, December 18, 2021 at Windom Area Health in Windom. LaVern Charles Christianson was born on September 8, 1941, to Bennett and Margaret (Aldahl) Christianson in Austin, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church, Austin, MN. LaVern attended a one-room elementary school (grades 1-8) in Freeborn County. He attended Blooming Prairie High School and graduated with the class of 1959. LaVern earned his bachelor's degree at Mankato State College in 1963. He attended graduate school at The Ohio State University and earned his master's degree in 1968. On June 8, 1968, LaVern married Carol Hewitt at the Belgrade Avenue United Methodist Church in North Mankato, MN. The marriage was blessed with two children, Mark and Cathy. LaVern taught mathematics for 36 years at Windom Area School, until retiring in 1999. LaVern was a long-time member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom, MN. His service included congregational president, Sunday school teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Bible Study leader, and served on a number of boards and committees. LaVern was a Lay Preacher and Worship Leader at the ALC and many other neighboring congregations. He was also a member of the SW Minnesota Synod Lutheran Men in Mission and served as a board member, treasurer, vice president and president. LaVern was proud of his Norwegian ancestry. He was a long-time member of the Sons of Norway, Stavanger Lodge 1-538, the Hallinglag, Vestlandslag, and Vosselag. He served Stavanger Lodge by holding several offices, including Lodge President. He was a frequent program speaker at his lodge, as well as many other Sons of Norway lodges in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. He especially enjoyed presenting the story of "The Last Viking King" from whom he is allegedly descended. LaVern enjoyed reading mysteries, spy thrillers, and historical based novels. He liked gardening, woodworking, and live theater, and was a member of the Windom Woodcarvers Club. LaVern was very active in 4-H, serving as a club leader for the Windom Workers 4-H Club. He received the 4-H Alumni award and was a member of the Cottonwood County 4-H Hall of Fame. He was a 4-H judge for many years at county fairs and the MN State Fair. LaVern is survived by his wife, Carol; two children Mark (David Pieczkiewicz) of Minneapolis, MN; and Cathy Christianson of Redwood Falls; one brother David (Donna) Christianson of Albert Lea, MN; surrogate grandchildren, Sophia and Charlie Wrenn of Dublin, OH; brother-in-law, Lowell (Meg) Hewitt; and four nieces and five nephews. LaVern was preceded in death by his parents, Bennett & Margaret Christianson; parents-in-law, Les & Grace Hewitt; one brother and sister-in-law, Merlin and Bertha Christianson.
