Lawrence
Cowan
Mar 7, 1941 — May 12, 2026
A Celebration of Life Service for Lawrence "Larry" Cowan, age 85, of Windom, will be held at the Amo Lutheran Church of rural Storden, on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 10:30 am, with a time of visitation and gathering for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held in the Amo Lutheran Cemetery.
Lawrence Dean "Larry" Cowan was born on March 7, 1941, in Worthington, Minnesota, to Cloyse and Vivian (Crabtree) Cowan. Larry grew up in Iona, Minnesota, attended school through the tenth grade, and then began his lifelong career in farming.
On August 26, 1961, Larry was united in marriage to Henrietta Muller. Larry and Henrietta were blessed with five children, Dennis, Tina, Jayne, Linda and Benjamin. He lovingly cared for his family and led by example with his honest nature. Larry grew a beard at a young age and few have ever seen him without it.
At the age of 74, Larry retired from farming in the Storden area. Farming was not just work, but a way of life he truly loved. He also took great pride and care in tending his flower gardens. Every year, Larry cut an evergreen tree out of his grove to serve as the family Christmas tree, a tradition his family cherished. Larry enjoyed spending time restoring antique tractors and attending tractor pulls, as well as 4-wheeling in Arizona.
On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Larry passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Society in Westbrook, Minnesota, at the age of 85.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Henrietta Cowan of Windom; children, Dennis (Jody) Cowan of Storden, Jayne (LeeLand) Mischke of Westbrook, Linda (Chris) Pack of Hayfield, Benjamin (Tricia) Cowan of Bemidji; additional children that stayed close, Colleen Shipp of Worthington, and Eldon Smith of Duncan, OK; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, William Cowan of Worthington, Sharon (Bud) Fritz of Reading and Joan Kontz of Pearce, AZ; brother-in-law, Siebe (Maizy) Muller; sisters-in-law, Annette Kemp and Janice Muller; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his daughter, Tina Lee Cowan; granddaughter, Taylor Rose Cowan; parents, Cloyse and Vivian Cowan; siblings, Don (Betty) Cowan, Norman Cowan, Gary Cowan, Joyce (Larry) Pesch; sister-in-law, Marilyn Cowan; and brother-in-law, Gary Muller.
Blessed be the memory of Lawrence Dean Cowan.
