A Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence E. Liepold, age 93 of Wayzata, formerly of Fairmont and Heron Lake, will be held on Friday, May 2nd 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. Military honors will be provided by the Sievert-Peterson American Legion Post #608 of Okabena. Burial is at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Heron Lake.

Lawrence Eugene "Lonnie" Liepold was born on February 29, 1932, a leap year, to the late Raymond Leonard and Katharina Dorthea (Claussen) Liepold, on the home farm in La Crosse Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. Lawrence was baptized and confirmed at a young age in the Catholic faith. He received his early education from country school and then attended Brewster and Storden High Schools before graduating from Westbrook High School. After graduation, Lawrence attended Worthington Junior College earning an aircraft mechanics certification with a government license. He was drafted by the United States Army in 1952, where he was decorated with a Purple Heart after being wounded in combat, while serving in the infantry. Lawrence was promoted to Corporal in the Air Section Division and was honorably discharged in 1954.

On June 18, 1956, Lawrence married his sweetheart, Norma Mixner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. The union was blessed with six children, Gregory, Robert, Linda, Pamela, Brenda and Gary. The family resided in Fairmont, Minnesota for more than 50 years. Lawrence and Norma later moved to the Willmar and the Minnetonka areas to live near their children. After Norma's passing in July 2022, Lawrence moved to Wayzata.

He worked for one year at Fairmont Airport and was then employed with 3M Company until his retirement in October 1992. Lawrence was passionate about aviation and earned his private pilot's license, even building his own airplane in the garage. He also loved building and flying R/C and U-Control Line model airplanes. Lawrence was an avid reader, who enjoyed history and war novels.

On April 21, 2025, Lawrence passed away peacefully and was taken home to the Lord, at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, at the age of 93 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Gregory Liepold of Sioux Falls, SD, Robert Liepold of Dacono, CO, Linda (Paul) Meschke of Victoria, MN, Pamela (Larry) Iverson of Wentworth, SD, Brenda (Bill) Knofczynski of Kandiyohi, MN, and Gary (Amy) Liepold of Woodstock, GA; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren (with one on the way); and two sisters-in-law, Leila Liepold of San Antonio, TX and Karyl (Daryl) Henze of Urbandale, IA; as well as other friends and relatives.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Joan (Mixner) Liepold; his parents, Raymond and Katharina Liepold; brother, Roger Liepold; and parents-in-law, John and Leila Mixner. Blessed be his memory.
