Leon Abe Crowell was born on June 5, 1941 to Lincoln Monroe and Blanch Matilda (Messenbrink) Crowell. He grew up in Dale Township, Cottonwood County, MN, where he attended country school. Then they moved to his grandparents' farm in Great Bend Township. He attended school in Wilder, MN until the eighth grade. Then he attended Windom High School, graduating in the Class of 1959.
He started farming with his father after high school, eventually moving to his own farm in Section 17 of Great Bend Township. Farming was his lifestyle. He finally retired in 2020, after battling cancer.
He was married on January 13, 1973 to Julie Ann Lyons, at the United Methodist Church in Windom. To this union, four children were born: Heather Ann, Abe Lincoln, Benjamen Curtis and Matthew Leon. They were active in school, church, and 4-H. He and Julie were married for 48 years. His pride and his joy were his thirteen grandchildren and one on the way. He enjoyed them very much.
Leon considered himself a biological farmer. He desired to be a good steward of the land that God gave him to farm. He raised hogs, sheep, chickens, and ducks for many years. He really enjoyed the bottle lambs.
He courageously battled acute myeloid leukemia from Oct 31, 2019 until his death on March 29, 2021. He was in remission for a short time, but relapsed in July of 2020.
He truly loved the Lord and enjoyed his church, First Baptist of Windom. He was a faithful and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed by his loving family.
Leon is survived by his wife, Julie; his children: Heather (Richard) Olsem of rural Dundee, MN; Abe Crowell and Erin Herding of Mankato, MN; Benjamen Crowell of Jackson, MN; Matthew (Amy) Crowell of Plato, MN; thirteen grandchildren: Christopher Rosenkranz of Jackson, MN, Kaylee Rosenkranz of Sioux Falls, SD, Megan and Grace Olsem of rural Dundee, MN, Emmersyn and Elliot Crowell of Jackson, MN, Gavin Lofgren, Harper, Abram, Ezekiel, Tobias, Oliver and Wendell Crowell of Plato, MN; two brothers, Earl (Vonnie) Crowell of Jeffers, MN, and Paul (Donna) Crowell of Jeffers, MN; one sister, Etta (Gary) Mather of Eagan, MN; brothers-in-law, Gordon (Tracy) Lyons of Champlin, MN; and Bruce (Yadeira) Lyons of St. Peter, MN.
