Leon Edward Stalls, III was born July 12, 1945 to Leon (Bud) Edward Stalls Sr. and Lois Imogene Rosemore Stalls in Sandstone, MN and was confirmed and baptized as a young man at Peace Lutheran Church, Alcester, S.D. Leon was united in marriage to Jane Ann Westin on June 17, 1967 at Nathaniel Lutheran Church in Alcester, South Dakota. They were married for 52 years living in Jeffers and Storden, Minnesota through the years. Leon received his elementary education in Elk Point, South Dakota, Jr. High School in Portsmouth, Virginia and high school in Alcester, South Dakota where he graduated in the Class of 1965. He then furthered his education at South Dakota State Teachers College in Springfield, South Dakota where he did his student teaching in Vermillion, South Dakota. Leon continued his education in Springfield, South Dakota where he received a double major in History and Industrial Arts; graduating in January of 1969. He received his first teaching job in Mobridge, South Dakota. In 1970, Leon accepted a position at Jeffers and continued teaching in Jeffers until 1972. Jeffers then consolidated with Storden to form Storden-Jeffers Public Schools where Leon taught from 1972 until 1993 and then Red Rock Central from 1993 to 1999. He then retired after 30 years and continued to substitute teach; substituting in 17 different classes/subjects. Leon taught many subjects in his teaching career including social studies, shop, geography, history, drafting and Industrial arts. He also coached football, girls' basketball, girls' softball and track and field~proudly coaching all 3 of his daughters at the Minnesota Girl's State Basketball Tournaments. Leon's hobbies included attending all his daughters and as many of the grandkids' school events, hunting and fishing, traveling, golfing, coin collecting and camping. Leon had a life full of challenges. He was in a farm accident in 1963 that affected his left foot. Was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1992 and fought the cancer battle for 28 years. When he first found out he had cancer they gave him 5 years to live so we're thankful he was a fighter! Besides cancer, he also had diabetes and his left leg was partially amputated in 2000. Leon recently had a stint placed in his heart and a brain bleed which both required surgery. Recently, Leon was hospitalized at Windom Area Health and passed away there on Saturday afternoon, March 28, 2020 at the age of 74 years. Leon was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Storden where he was involved in the Bethany Lutheran Church Council, Storden City Council, MEA board member, on the Thrivent board, Sun Valley Gun Club and Relay for Life Board. Leon is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Stalls of Storden; three daughters & 9 grandchildren, Victoria (Kip) Rasmussen of Bingham Lake, MN — Brooke, Brady and Bree; Heidi (Joe) Oetken of Omaha, NE — Jacob; Makenzi (Paul) Miles of Montrose, S.D. — Taylor, Harley, Hayley, Maggie and Cody; siblings, Laura Aikens (Jim Remington) of Portsmouth, VA; Gary Stalls of Portsmouth, VA; Jim (Tammy) Stalls of Newport News, VA; sisters-in-law, Susan (Lauren) Lind of Turner, ME and Carol Hammerstrom of Rockledge, FL; and many nieces and nephews. Leon is preceded in death by his parents, Leon (Bud) Sr. and Lois Stalls; brothers, Richard and David Stalls; in-laws, David and Violet Westin; brother-in-law, Scott Hammerstrom; and Leon & Jane's beloved dog, Bailey Blessed be the memory of Leon Edward Stalls, III.
