Obituary for LeRoy Monroe Sydness
LeRoy Monroe Sydness, son of Roy and Mabel (Teig) Sydness, was born June 12, 1923 on the family farm in Jackson County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Belmont Lutheran Church in rural Jackson. LeRoy's childhood revolved around the farm and his family where he helped raise livestock and tend to the crops along with his school work. LeRoy graduated from Lakefield High School in 1941 and then began working the farm with his parents.
LeRoy married Mildred Goede from Jackson on September 16, 1945 at the Methodist Church in Jackson, MN. LeRoy's primary time went to the family and the farm, in addition to being very involved in the community. He was a 4-H Leader, a member of and President of the Jackson County Pork Producers. In 1955, he was awarded Jackson county's Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year. He served on the Belmont Township Board, was Director on the Jackson County DAC and helped establish a home for special needs adults in Lakefield. He served on the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Council, taught Sunday School, was a member of the Crop Association, grew Certified Seed and was Superintendent of Crops at the Jackson County Fair in 1953. LeRoy was also active as a member of the Soybean Association, Livestock Association, was a member of the Farmer's Union for over 25 years and worked on the telephone line repair crew in the area.
He retired from farming after 45 years in 1986 and then took a Carpentry Class at Jackson Vocational Technical School. He enjoyed making chests of drawers for his grandchildren along with many cribbage boards that his family still enjoys.
LeRoy and Mildred raised five children on their farm 8 miles east of Lakefield. He and Mildred visited over 15 countries in Europe and South America and also visited Hawaii multiple times among many other parts of the United States.
LeRoy passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 14th at his residence in Minnetonka, Minnesota. He was 98 years old.
LeRoy is survived by four children, Alice Rasmussen of Waconia, MN, Janet Washington of Boston, MA, Kari (Mark) Anderson of Mooresville, NC, and Rebecca (David) Liebl of Eden Prairie, MN; eight grandchildren Jeffrey, James, Jeremy, Jonathan, and Jared Rasmussen, Ivy Kristin Washington, Ryan and Eric Liebl; eight great grandchildren Derek, Kristi, Kaitlyn, Corinne, Gretchen, Anna, Jacob Rasmussen and Blake Anderson; a sister-in-law Gladys Marzahn of Burnsville, MN.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred, son Jon, grandson Christopher Anderson, sister Clarine Sporrey, son-in-laws Jory Rasmussen and Willie Washington.
