Lucille "Lucy" Ferguson was born on August 26, 1925, in Heron Lake, Minnesota to the late Herman Paul and Mary Agnes (Schaffer) Henkels. She was baptized on August 30, 1925, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake and later confirmed there on July 5, 1941. Lucy received her early education in a country school and at Sacred Heart Catholic School before graduating from Heron Lake High School in the Class of 1944.
Lucy was united in marriage on October 3, 1945, to Robert Burns Ferguson on a warm windy day. She wore a white satin gown with a long veil. Her attendants were her sister, Bernadine Henkels and her cousin, Dorothy Miller. They wore yellow and pink gowns. Bob's attendants were two good friends, Tony Ebner and Leonard T. Leopold. They spent their honeymoon in northern Minnesota and the Twin Cities. Over their decades of married life, they enjoyed farming west of Heron Lake. In their free time, they relished going camping with their children, socializing with their friends and family, and in their later years, traveling with their friends. In 2003, they retired and built a new home in Heron Lake, which they moved into in 2004. Bob passed away on September 4, 2013. After his death, Lucy continued to live in Heron Lake. She passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, at the age of 94.
Lucy was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake, where she was a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters. In retirement, she volunteered at the Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake, providing hair services and reminiscing with the residents. She enjoyed many hobbies in life, which included baking—she was known for her Kuchen, gardening, spending time with her family, and visiting with friends. She was an incredibly patient, generous, and caring individual, and especially loved cuddling and nurturing small children.
