Lucille Pierson Lewis Nelson was born April 19, 1931 in Duluth, Minnesota as Beverly Ann Froslee to Raunaug Margaret Froslee. Ben and Leonora Pierson adopted her through Lutheran Welfare in December 1931 where she started life on a farm near Butterfield, Minnesota. She was baptized in the Pierson home on December 25, 1931 by Reverend N. I. Evenson. The Pierson family lived on the farm until November 1937. The family moved to Windom, Minnesota to a house already owned by Ben Pierson. This allowed Lucille to attend public school in Windom. Lucille was confirmed in 1944 at the East Side Lutheran Church by Reverend T. A. Thompson. She graduated Windom High School in 1949. Lucille enrolled in Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the Elementary Education field. She transferred her college credits from Augustana to Mankato State Normal College and graduated there in December 1951. She immediately began teaching in Wilder Public School. The following year she taught in a Jackson County rural school. After saving enough money, Lucille returned to Augustana to complete her Elementary Education degree which she accomplished in 1954. Her father was happy to have fulfilled his promise to educate her when he adopted her. She met Richard Lewis (son of Clifford and Hellen Lewis) in 1955. On June 2, 1956, they were married by Reverend Floyd Lien at the American Lutheran Church Chapel. The couple had a son, Steven, who was born on December 25, 1957 at the Windom Hospital. The family moved to Mankato in 1958, where Richard worked as a pharmacist. In 1960, the family move to Brookings, South Dakota where Richard worked on a Secondary Education degree and Lucille worked on her Master's degree. Their daughter, Jane, was born October 11, 1960 at the Brookings Hospital. The family moved to Freeman, South Dakota in 1962 to become instructors at the Mennonite Junior College and Academy. Richard taught science classes while Lucille taught physical education. Then they moved to Sanborn, Minnesota in 1965 to teach at the Sanborn Public School. They finally relocated to Windom, Minnesota to be near their elderly parents. Lucille began working as a correspondent and a reporter for the Worthington Daily Globe in 1972, a position she held for 23 years. She loved her job there and all the contacts that she made. Lucille's mother passed away in November 1978 followed by her father in May 1980. Richard and Lucille remodeled her parent's home in 1980 and began living there after completion. In 1980, her husband Richard began to suffer from kidney problems. Lucille drove her husband to the VA Hospital in Minneapolis on countless trips for nine years until Richard passed away at the hospital on August 6, 1989. While continuing to live in Windom after Richard died, Lucille went on a trip to Israel in 1995. During the trip, she met Alton Nelson from Maple Lake, Minnesota. They were married on June 22, 1995 at the American Lutheran Chapel in Windom, officiated by Pastor Daniel Carlson. Lucille moved to Alton's house on Indian Lake near Maple Lake, Minnesota while still retaining ownership of her home in Windom. During the next 12 years the couple lived near Maple Lake while wintering over in Texas. Because of Al's health problems, the couple moved back to Windom by 2008. Alton passed away January 6, 2012 at home in Windom and is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Lucille loved people, history and genealogy. She wrote a number of "lost church" histories for both Wright and Cottonwood counties. She compiled a history of the American Lutheran Church in Windom after the 2006 church fire. She participated in KDOM Radio station segments "Coffee Talk with Lucille" that covered Windom history and other local topics. Lucille recently became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom, MN and passed away there peacefully on Sunday March 29, 2020 at the age of 88 years. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Faber (Danny Ratcliff), her granddaughter, Sarah Ucin (Bernard Smith); her great-grandson, Naeem and great-granddaughter, Saniya. She is also survived by her son, Steven Lewis (Beth) and grandson, Jeremy. Preceding Lucille in death are her parents, two husbands and an infant sister, Mildred Pierson. A Celebration of Lucille's life will be held at a later date at the American Lutheran Church in Windom.
